Cherie Trail

We tent camped here for 10 days in a spot with electric. I wouldn't suggest a tent spot, as they are a bit of a walk from the bathrooms and offer minimal shade. We looked for a spot with trees for shade and ability to hang hammocks and found a great spot for our needs. The ground slopes at a bunch of sites so be mindful of that when booking. The place was very respectful of quiet hours. And on evenings with concerts down the road at the Six Flags Darien Lake Amphitheatre, there were police at the entrance to the campground ensuring only guests with reservations enter the property so that no "parties in the woods" occurs. We left our campsite regularly to go see some sites in Western NY and our site was always untouched when we would return, which was great. There were hiking trails at the campground, 2 playgrounds that we came across, swimming, and fishing. It was only a couple minutes drive to the Six flags park, about 25 min to Buffalo, less than an hour from Niagara Falls, less than 30 minutes from Letchworth State Park for hiking trails with waterfalls.

Of the 11 NY State campgrounds we’ve stayed at in the last 3 months this is by far the worst. First let me tell you about the good things here. There is a nice playground near the small swimming beach. The beach is clean, has a lifeguard, and is made of sand and mostly very small pebbles. The nice, new bathrooms between the beach and playground, on the bad side were dirty and obviously had not been cleans for at least two days. Toilet paper and diapers on the floor of the women’s bathroom and outside were there from days before. Two of the toilets had not been flushed. I can’t speak to the men’s bathroom. If you are coming to camp they will not let you check in before 1pm, even if you site is unoccupied. Be prepared to wait. The check in people are nice but are rule followers no matter what. However, they didn’t need to see my rabies certificates for my dogs even though this is also a rule. I showed them anyway. Because… it’s the rule. But that’s fine. Each park decides which rule to follow and which not to. It depends on on who’s in charge of the park. The campground was crowded. Campers were stacked in as close as they could fit for the most part. At least half of the sites had no shade. The sites had random small trash throughout. The site pads weren’t very level but had a good packing of stone. The worst park were the bathhouses. The bathhouses were old with broken tiles in the walls, floor, and showers. My husband said he had to cut his going off because the smell was so bad it was making him sick. The women’s was better as to smell. Not nice. But better. The bathrooms were NOT clean. The showers were NOT clean. They were smelly and disgusting. We couldn’t use them. For a park that doesn’t have water at most sites this is a game breaker. We will not come here again. Nor will we recommend anyone stay here.

I comment only on the beach and lake. There are two swimming areas roped off and lifeguards on staff. The water and sand are clean. The swim area allows enough depth to really get in a good swim and rates are very reasonable. I enjoy that there is not the noise and crowds of the theme park nearby. There is ample acreage for trails and I have ridden my horse through the park years ago. A lovely park and hidden gem for those who want a quiet retreat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Darien Lake State Park was a perfect getaway even with our cat along for the ride! We camped in our 32ft RV for several days and found it to be enjoyable, peaceful and surprisingly cat-friendly. We kept our cat on a leash and in a soft outdoor pen while we relaxed outside, and nobody bothered us. the environment was chill, and most other campers were respectful of pets. The campground itself was easy to navigate, and our site was very level with a solid electric hookup. We had trees for shade, a picnic table, and a fire ring. The only gross thing for me and my husband was there were definitely nasty showers tho. If you are going to shower here, WEAR SLIDES or any kind of shoes to protect your feet! overall yes I would suggest staying here if you’re wondering if it’s worth it. Cause it definitely is.

Tent camping at site 76 for the week of July 4th. We lucked out with this site as most of the sites are geared more towards RVs. Beach was clean and well maintained. Water was very refreshing.
