Davis Mountains
Overview
Davis Mountains State Park offers a unique high-altitude retreat in the heart of the Trans-Pecos region. Located near Fort Davis, this park provides a dramatic contrast to the surrounding desert with its rugged mountain peaks and diverse wildlife. It is one of the most storied parks in Texas, known for its historic architecture and a climate that stays significantly cooler during the summer months, providing a refreshing escape for desert travelers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at an elevation of over 5,000 feet, the park is defined by its stunning igneous rock formations and desert grasslands. The drive into the park is a highlight itself, especially the scenic Skyline Drive, which offers panoramic views of the mountains and the desert floor below. The surrounding landscape provides a profound sense of isolation and tranquility, making it a premier destination for those looking to disconnect from the modern world.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates various camping styles with a range of sites, including several options with full hookups for larger rigs. Travelers will appreciate the well-maintained restrooms and the interpretive center, which provides context on the local flora and fauna. Bird watchers will find the specialized birding blinds particularly rewarding, as they are strategically placed to observe the rare and diverse avian species that thrive in this high-elevation mountain ecosystem.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is easily found along the miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through the jagged hills. A short drive away, the McDonald Observatory offers world-class stargazing opportunities through its famous star parties. History enthusiasts can explore the nearby Fort Davis National Historic Site, which provides a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century frontier life and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers who served in the region.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers who appreciate vast landscapes and some of the darkest night skies in the country. It appeals to RVers who prefer a rustic, scenic environment over a commercial resort experience. Whether you are a dedicated birder or a family seeking a cool mountain getaway, the park offers a peaceful atmosphere that rewards those who enjoy the slower pace of the high desert.

I fell in love with the open skies so I decided to see if I could catch some photos during some weather. Didn't get to hike much sadly, didn't have my rain gear. But I love the views and the interpretive center bird watching area.

When we got to this park, there was no cell phone signal for Verizon or T-Mobile. These sites were spacious but very unusual. The RV was parked level, but down below our tow vehicle by about a foot. The park focuses a lot on viewing birds and wildlife plus the history of the park was very interesting as we learned about the CCC contributions during the Great Depression. There was a guided star viewing hike available at night. We drove up to an observation point and took lots of pictures down into the valley. The local town of Fort Davis had nothing to really see. The stores and restaurants are closed before two in the afternoon and we’re pretty rustic. There is a refurbished hotel that looks nice.

This is one of my favorite state parks-- the campsites are well maintained and offer shade at the perfect times. The birding experience here is top notch, and I'm not a birder. They have some awesome trails that offer amazing views without too much stair climbing-- my round, sedentary butt still made it up and over the mountains with well placed benches for rest along the hike. This place is wonderful for kids to run around. The star viewing is amazing.

Beautiful views of one of the coolest state parks in Texas! The scenic drive is worth it, any time of day. Make sure you check out both bird blinds / animal observation areas, and take time to appreciate the structures made by the CCC. If you’re lucky you might even see a family of Javelina trotting through! If the Indian Lodge is open, defintely try to stay in the historic part-LBJ and Lady Bird used to stay there too.

A Peaceful Escape with Stunning Views Davis Mountains State Park is a true Texas gem! If you're looking for a place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and take in some absolutely breathtaking scenery, this is it. The hiking trails are well-maintained and offer a great mix of challenge and reward—especially the Skyline Drive Trail, which gives you panoramic views that are worth every step. The wildlife is abundant (we spotted deer and tons of birds), and the starry skies at night are nothing short of magical. Campsites are spacious and clean, and the staff is incredibly helpful and welcoming. The historic Indian Lodge is also a unique bonus—great for those who want comfort with their adventure. Whether you're camping, hiking, stargazing, or just passing through, Davis Mountains State Park offers a peaceful, beautiful escape that’s hard to beat. Definitely a must-visit for nature lovers!
