Dawson Equestrian
Overview
Dawson Equestrian is a specialized campground nestled in the scenic heart of Kananaskis Country, Alberta. Unlike standard RV parks, this site is designed primarily for travelers visiting with their horses, offering a rustic atmosphere that prioritizes access to nature over modern luxuries. It serves as a basecamp for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies foothills. While the facilities are basic, the sense of tranquility and the immediate access to the Dawson trail system make it a unique destination for dedicated outdoor enthusiasts.
Location & Surroundings
Located just off Highway 68, the park is situated within the Bow Valley Provincial Park area, surrounded by dense forests and rolling mountain terrain. The environment is characterized by towering evergreens and the crisp mountain air typical of the Alberta foothills. This location provides a secluded feel while remaining accessible from Bragg Creek or Calgary. The surrounding landscape is a haven for wildlife, and campers often enjoy sightings of deer or elk wandering through the quiet, forested perimeter of the campground.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic recreation site, Dawson Equestrian offers unserviced campsites suitable for various RV sizes, though big rigs should navigate the access roads with care. The park is specifically equipped with horse corrals, loading ramps, and hitching rails to accommodate equestrian travelers. On-site amenities include vault toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables at each site. It is important to note that there are no power or water hookups, making it an ideal choice for self-contained units. Water is typically available via a hand pump for livestock use.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this park is the extensive network of multi-use trails that fan out directly from the campground. These paths are perfect for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking through the diverse Kananaskis terrain. For those looking to explore further, the Kananaskis Valley offers world-class hiking and photography opportunities just a short drive away. Additionally, the charming hamlet of Bragg Creek is nearby, offering local shops and dining for those who want a brief break from campfire cooking after a long day on the trails.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for equestrian travelers who want a dedicated space to house their horses while enjoying the trail systems of Alberta. It is also an excellent fit for dry campers and off-grid enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, natural setting over the amenities of a busy commercial resort. If you value direct access to the wilderness and don’t mind a back-to-basics approach to RVing, Dawson Equestrian provides an authentic mountain experience that is increasingly hard to find in more developed areas.

Just passing by and turning into the parking lot, the campsite is right next to the parking lot, so the noise and dust may bother you.Next time I come to hike, it seems to be good, not too many people.

This sites are perfect for night stay with a fire pit at the site and a table with bench seating but no hookups but there is a pit toilet but no shower. It got busy in the morning with people parking here to go for trail hikes which are really full of beautiful places and lots of tree.

This is a parking lot and trail head for the Jumping Pound mountain. You can camp at this location and enjoy the rivers and scenic climbs.

Great little site. We arrived very late on a Friday night late July and there were only 2 RVs. It got very busy on Saturday though and filled up. The campsites are very close together and you can see your neighbours, but being right next to the creek was a major plus, especially for our dog.
