De Soto/Big Biloxi

Overview

The Big Biloxi Recreation Area, nestled within the De Soto National Forest, offers a serene escape for RVers looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle. Located near Saucier, Mississippi, this campground provides a traditional camping experience where the natural beauty of the Gulf Coast’s piney woods takes center stage. It serves as a gateway to the vast wilderness of the forest while remaining accessible for those traveling through southern Mississippi. The atmosphere is quiet and rustic, prioritizing a connection with nature over modern commercial distractions.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the park is defined by its proximity to the Big Biloxi River. The landscape is characterized by towering longleaf pines and a lush forest canopy that provides ample shade for travelers. While it feels remote, the park is conveniently located off Highway 49, making it an easy stop for those exploring the Saucier region or heading toward the coastal cities. The surrounding forest terrain offers a sense of seclusion that is increasingly rare in more developed coastal areas.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic destination focused on the outdoor experience rather than resort-style luxury. The campground features sites equipped with water and electric hookups, though visitors should note that sewer hookups are not available at individual sites; a dump station is provided for convenience. Guests have access to modern bathhouses with hot showers, ensuring comfort after a day of forest exploration. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, making it easy to enjoy traditional campfire evenings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy, starting with the Tuxachanie Trail, a premier hiking destination that meanders through the forest. The Big Biloxi River is perfect for fishing, wading, or launching a kayak to enjoy the gentle currents. For a change of pace, the vibrant casinos, beaches, and dining options of Gulfport and Biloxi are only a short drive to the south, offering a perfect blend of forest peace and coastal excitement within a single trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

De Soto/Big Biloxi is ideal for nature lovers and hikers who prefer a quiet, wooded atmosphere over a crowded commercial park. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to introduce children to the wonders of the national forest or for solo travelers seeking a peaceful retreat. Nice quiet and close to everything. There is no host right now. We would consider that. We are here every winter. The dump station is out of order. Someone needs to offer this park a little TLC. We'll keep coming back 😀

Awesome campground. They have electrical and water hookups, fire pits with grill, as well as BBQ pit. Also you still feel as if your in the woods and not an RV parking lot. Been here about a dozen times over the years and it's always a very relaxed atmosphere with no crowds. Only drawback I've experienced is the road runs very close to 3 of the sites.

The campground host Mike and his wife were very nice and pleasant. And helpful with any questions or concerns that we had.

Has water and electric with a dump station. We stayed 2 night in February 2022. Had a couple staying and working as camp host. They were Awesome! We arrived after dark and he directed us to the best spot for our 35’ Motorhome. Bath and restrooms were old but clean. You ck yourself in and leave payment in Dropbox. Our only complaint is that Hwy 49 is not marked where to turn off for this park and the turn lane is way too short. Dangerous to approach at night - do not recommend coming after dark.
