Delaware

Overview

Delaware State Park offers a peaceful escape in the heart of Central Ohio, centered around a sprawling 1,300-acre reservoir. This public recreation area provides a mix of dense woodlands and open meadows, creating a diverse landscape for outdoor enthusiasts. The park is well-regarded for its accessibility and well-maintained grounds, making it a reliable choice for both local weekenders and long-distance travelers passing through the region. It balances natural beauty with the convenience of modern facilities to ensure a comfortable stay in the scenic Ohio countryside.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of the city of Delaware, the park feels remarkably secluded despite its proximity to major highways. The surrounding area is characterized by scenic rural landscapes and the winding Olentangy River. Travelers will find that the park is conveniently located near the intersection of US-23 and OH-15, providing easy access for large rigs. The lush greenery and waterfront views offer a refreshing contrast to the nearby urban sprawl, making it a prime destination for those seeking a quiet retreat without venturing too far from civilization.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a range of features designed for a comfortable stay for RVers and their families:

  • Over 200 campsites featuring electrical hookups that accommodate various rig sizes.
  • Access to modern bathhouses equipped with heated showers and clean flush toilets.
  • A large sandy swimming beach and multiple boat launch ramps for water access.

In addition to these features, the park offers a full-service dump station and potable water fill-up points for self-contained units. For land-based recreation, visitors can enjoy a professional-grade disc golf course and over six miles of well-marked hiking trails.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors are only a short drive from the world-renowned Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. History buffs and foodies will enjoy exploring downtown Delaware, which features historic architecture and local eateries. Nature lovers can also visit nearby Alum Creek State Park or take a short trip into Columbus for cultural museums and professional sports. The region is rich with agritourism opportunities, including local orchards and seasonal farm markets that provide a taste of local Ohio flavors.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for family campers seeking a safe and engaging environment for children to explore. Anglers and boaters will find the reservoir particularly appealing due to the abundance of crappie, bass, and muskie. It is also a perfect fit for nature photographers and birdwatchers who appreciate the diverse local wildlife and migratory patterns. If you prefer a state park experience that combines waterfront activity with comfortable amenities, this Delaware destination is an excellent choice for your next Ohio adventure.

The site we were in was swampy, probably because of a large rain recently - but it looks like it is an ongoing issue because hay had been put down over the mud, and it had been there a little while. Other than that, the site was fine. Because we got there on a Monday (5/19), we nearly had the whole place to ourselves, which was nice for quiet and solitude. Shower / restroom facilities were clean and updated nicely.

We took the dog and walked quite a bit. There were only a few people around and it was peaceful with great views of the lake.

Beautiful grounds! Camp host was amazing. Brought ice popsicle for kids. Had a Sunday party. Then a foam party. Grateful for the hospitality. Never been to a camp ground like this. The Dam tour was neat.
