Denali/Teklanika River

Overview

The Teklanika River Campground, often referred to as Tek, offers one of the most immersive wilderness experiences available to RVers in Alaska. Located at Mile 29 of the Denali Park Road, it is the furthest point into the park accessible by private vehicle. Staying here requires a minimum three-night stay, ensuring a slow-paced, deeply connected experience with the surrounding subarctic landscape and the wild heart of the park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on a high bluff overlooking the vast, braided Teklanika River, the campground is surrounded by dense boreal forest and sweeping mountain views. Because it lies beyond the Savage River check station, the area feels significantly more remote than campgrounds near the park entrance. The sounds of the rushing glacial river and the wind through the spruce trees define the serene natural atmosphere of this high-latitude destination.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive, dry camping facility with 53 sites tailored for those who enjoy off-grid living. While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, the park provides essential features including:

  • Vault toilets located within the campground loops
  • A central potable water filling station
  • Individual picnic tables and fire rings at each site

Visitors must arrive with full freshwater tanks and empty waste tanks, as there is no dump station on-site. It is important to note that once you park your RV, it must remain stationary for the duration of your stay to protect the restricted Denali Park Road.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the direct access to the Teklanika River, where visitors can hike along the gravel bars or watch for wildlife like grizzly bears and moose. Campers are eligible to purchase a Tek Pass, which provides discounted, unlimited access to the park’s transit buses for trips further into the interior. This allows for world-class photography and hiking opportunities while leaving the driving to the park's professional operators.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who value solitude and wildlife over modern conveniences. If you are a traveler looking to disconnect from the digital world and embrace a rustic, into the wild lifestyle, Teklanika is a perfect fit. It is best suited for those who plan ahead, as the restricted access and limited site availability require careful preparation and a desire for a stationary, multi-day retreat.

What a great 3 nights here at Tek. We did have rain at some point on each day but it didn't stop the exploding. The pit toilets were very clean and smelled great. They have a walk in food storage if you need somewhere to store your food. There were a few tenters when we were there but most had a trailer or other RV. There are a lot of bear proof trash recepticles. This was one of the cleanest campgrounds we have been to. We were in loop 1 and had a great site. No one ever took the site next to us and the other side was the food locker so we had a really quiet spot. We didn't see the camphost except at their site. There is a bus stop right outside the campground so you can get in the green transit bus if you have a Tek Pass. We bought one so that was great for going farther into the park. They will take you out to mile 43. You can ask them to stop anywhere and if you need a ride back to the campground you just have to flag a bus down. We walked along the Teklanika River but didn't see any wildlife there. When on the transit bus, we saw Dall Sheep, plenty of Caribou, and at the Teklanika Rest Stop, there was a grizzly along the river. What great memories we will have of this campground!

Very nice quiet campground. Must book for a minimum of 3 nights. Once you arrive at campground, you can not drive your vehicle until you leave the campground going back to the main Denali area. The shuttle bus has a stop in front of the campground, so you can travel the park road. Must have a ticket in order to ride the bus.

Great camp sites! Deep enough into the park to get a more remote experience, clean and well spaced camp sites, and walk-up access to the Teklanika River which makes for an easy hike with plenty of animal spotting potential (we opened up the season back in May 2025 and saw a caribou herd with calves galore, a moose, a handful of porcupine, and plenty of smaller animals and birds). Highly recommend getting a spot on the far-back side of the campground since your site will have a path leading directly to the river and there’s a bit more privacy due to fewer neighbors too.

We had a wonderful 3 day stay here - really decent weather, no rain, not really windy. Plenty of bathrooms (pit toilets) and very well spaced amongst the sites. From this section of the park, you will NOT get a view of Denali - must take a bus further in (@$33 a ticket). Various sizes of sites, but most of them will accommodate starlink and solar. Camp host did his job well - walked campground throughout the day - cleaning & stocking bathrooms, checking generator hours, and just being seen. Our check in at Riley Creek Mercantile was easy and very informative - the gal who checked us in had ALL the information and answers to our questions. Something to be said for letting a concessionaire run the business portion of the park and letting the rangers do their jobs in the park. Water spouts with potable water, but not for filling your RV - only for filling jugs, etc. There are a lot if trash and recycling bins throughout the loops. It appears that the sites on the first loop, 1-27, are larger than the second loop. Dump station and potable water available at Mercantile and they encouraged us to dump and fill prior to going to campground.

Amazing experience at Tek. Great campground host. Many nice campers and a much shorter bus ride to East Fork. You can ride the bus as much as you want with a Tek pass. And the icing on the cake--spectacular views of Mt. McKinley!
