Deschutes/Cultus Lake Campground

Overview

Nestled deep within the Deschutes National Forest, the Cultus Lake Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest outdoor experience for travelers seeking a connection with nature. This park is a beloved destination for those who appreciate a mix of high-energy water sports and the quiet solitude of an old-growth forest. Situated along the eastern shore of a stunning glacial lake, the campground provides a rugged yet welcoming environment where RVers can disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the pristine beauty of the high Cascades.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is located along the iconic Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, a region defined by its volcanic history and alpine landscapes. Positioned near Blue River, OR, it serves as a gateway to the diverse ecosystems of the Oregon Cascades. The area is dominated by the looming presence of Mount Cultus, which provides a dramatic backdrop for the crystal-clear waters of the lake. Towering ponderosa pines and Douglas firs surround the sites, creating a sense of privacy and a cool, shaded canopy for campers to enjoy during the warm summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

While the campground maintains a rustic atmosphere, it provides the essential features needed for a comfortable outdoor stay. Visitors will find paved parking spurs that accommodate a variety of RV lengths, though travelers should be prepared for a traditional dry-camping experience. The facility includes vault toilets and access to potable water throughout the loops. A major highlight of the park is the direct boat ramp access, which is specifically designed to handle motorized watercraft, making it a rare find among the high-altitude lakes in the region.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, as Cultus Lake is one of the few in the area that permits high-speed motorized boating, jet skiing, and water skiing. Anglers frequent the deep waters in search of trophy-sized lake trout and rainbow trout. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Cultus Lake Resort offers a marina and dining options. Additionally, hikers can access the Three Sisters Wilderness via several trailheads located just a short distance from the campground, offering miles of exploration through volcanic terrain.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active families and water sports enthusiasts who want a vibrant, adventure-filled lake environment during the day and a peaceful forest retreat at night. Because the sites do not offer hookups, it is best suited for RVers who are comfortable with self-contained camping and value a scenic, natural setting over modern resort luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the rugged splendor of the Oregon wilderness while enjoying easy access to one of the region’s premier recreation lakes.

Great campground with very large sites. A healthy mixture of mature down to very young pine trees and a beautiful lakeside setting! The water in Cultus Lake was clean and a relatively decent temperature for swimming and boating. Pit toilets and water faucets were the amenities offered at this campground.

We stayed at this campground recently and had a pretty rough experience. There were several groups of drunk young people around us—blasting music, yelling, and smoking weed and cigarettes until about 3 AM. It felt like we were totally surrounded, and there was no staff around to do anything about it. The lake is absolutely beautiful and the nature around is great, but the noise really took away from the whole vibe.

I went to Cultus Lake on business and was on a sailboat mostly. The lodge has amazing food especially if you haven’t had a warm meal in a few days. The camp hosts Eric and Don are so nice and accommodating and went above and beyond to make us comfortable in the campgrounds. Bathrooms are mostly clean but there is no running showers or sinks to wash with. The lodge has flushing toilets but I would feel bad using them without getting something from the small store or restaurant. We were underprepared for dry tent camping and didn’t realize it was so far back to town. Overall it was alright. :)

It's beautiful! Campsites are spacious. This is more for boats and jet skis as it has waves that can be choppy. Water is very clear.

Mosquitos, mosquitos, and more mosquitos. We stayed at the boat-in campground on the west side, which was secluded and beautiful. After about 8 pm the sounds of nature were all we heard. The campsites are big offer more privacy than most. It's a pretty little lake and nice to paddle on, just too many bugs. We went through a whole bottle of deet and we were always in a swarm. The campground on the east side seemed much better, while launching and pulling out our boat we didn't notice mosquitos there.
