Deschutes/Elk Lake Campground

Overview

Elk Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-desert alpine experience within the Deschutes National Forest. Located along the stunning Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, this spot provides a rustic retreat for those looking to escape the hustle of city life. It is widely recognized for its scenic mountain vistas and immediate access to one of the most popular lakes in Central Oregon. The atmosphere is laid-back, where the sound of the wind through the pines replaces the noise of the highway.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 30 miles west of Bend, the campground sits at an elevation of 4,900 feet. The landscape is dominated by towering hemlock and fir trees, providing a shaded canopy for most sites. From the shoreline, campers are treated to breathtaking views of Mt. Bachelor and South Sister, making it a prime location for nature photography and peaceful morning reflections. The proximity to the water ensures that the air remains cool and refreshing even during the peak of the Oregon summer.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on natural beauty rather than modern luxury. You will find vault toilets and potable water stations, but it is important to note there are no electricity or sewer hookups available for RVs. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring, encouraging classic campfire evenings under the stars. The park also features a convenient boat launch, facilitating easy entry for non-motorized and low-speed watercraft into the crystal-clear lake.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the main draw, with visitors frequently engaging in paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing. For land-based adventures, the nearby Elk Lake Resort offers a sense of community with seasonal dining, live music, and equipment rentals just a short walk or paddle away. Hikers can access numerous trails within the Deschutes National Forest, including routes leading into the Three Sisters Wilderness, offering miles of pristine backcountry exploration, volcanic landscapes, and alpine meadows.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prioritize scenery and outdoor access over digital connectivity and full hookups. It is a perfect match for active families and solo travelers who enjoy dry camping in a social yet serene environment. If you are looking to disconnect from the grid and immerse yourself in the rugged, majestic beauty of the Oregon Cascades, this campground is an unbeatable choice for your next road trip.

It was a bit more crowded than I was hoping for but everyone was really friendly and helpful. We had our dogs off leash as did everyone else and that was fine. The water was perfect for swimming. We also did kayaking. The ground was pretty rocky so bring water shoes and don't plan on getting a good sandy spot unless you get up to the lake waaaaay early. We got there about 11:30 and it was hard to find a spot. Beautiful view of the mountains and incredibly fun to swim and play in the water. 💙

Lovely lake! Rough drive in. One hour ten minutes for 11 mile drive.

It's a nice and simple campground. Enough space to spread and breathe a little. The camp host was super nice and welcoming. I haven't had any complaints so far with Elk lake in general except for the masses of people at the resort in the summer :)
