Deschutes/Gull Point Campground

Overview

Deschutes/Gull Point Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest outdoor experience on the shores of the Wickiup Reservoir. As the largest and most developed camping facility on the reservoir, it provides a serene escape into the Deschutes National Forest. The park is defined by its ponderosa pine canopy and immediate access to some of Central Oregon’s most productive fishing waters. This is a destination where the pace of life slows down, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the natural rhythms of the high desert forest.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 45 miles southwest of Bend, OR, the campground feels worlds away from the urban bustle. The site is nestled along the northern shore of the reservoir, offering sweeping views of the water against a backdrop of the Cascade Range peaks. The surrounding landscape is a mix of dense forest and volcanic history, providing a cool, shaded environment even during the peak of summer. The elevation ensures crisp mornings and clear, star-filled nights that are perfect for campfire storytelling.

Amenities & Park Features

This campground caters to those who enjoy a more traditional, rustic camping style while still providing essential infrastructure. The facility features multiple boat ramps and dedicated fish cleaning stations, making it a premier choice for boaters. While there are no hookups, the sites are designed to accommodate various RV lengths and provide a sense of seclusion and privacy. Visitors have access to potable water and vault toilets throughout the grounds. Each site is furnished with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, encouraging an authentic outdoor living experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the exceptional trophy-sized brown trout and kokanee salmon fishing available just steps from their campsites. Beyond the water, the area is a gateway to the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, which connects travelers to numerous alpine lakes and trailheads. A short drive away, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument offers opportunities to explore ancient lava flows and obsidian fields. Birdwatchers will also find the reservoir's wetlands to be a vibrant habitat for ospreys, eagles, and various waterfowl.

Who This Park Is Best For

Gull Point is an ideal match for anglers and nature lovers who prefer a scenic, forest-based setting over a commercial RV resort. It is a perfect fit for travelers with self-contained rigs who value peace and quiet and direct access to water recreation. Families looking to unplug and spend their days hiking, boating, or wildlife viewing will find the atmosphere welcoming. If your travel style favors natural beauty and a rugged, authentic Oregon experience, this campground will serve as an excellent basecamp.

Wonderful campground. All of the sites were pull-through and were well spaced apart. We stayed in site 34 and we had direct access to the lake at the back of the camp site. The shore was sandy and the lake was clear enough to swim in.

Nice place! Wildlife included chipmunks, toads, pelicans, ducks, and tons of trout. Our site was right on the water, and the host had raked most of the pine needles out of the way. Gave it Zen vibes. I hardly saw any garbage, the roads were in good shape, and the boat launch had plenty of room to negotiate. Lots of water and sink dump stations, too.

Hosts are very rude. Reservations are hard to get. Place sells out as soon as slots are available. Bathrooms were out of service for over 3 weeks at the time we left (could still be out for all I know). Only working toilet was an outhouse next to the boat launch. When we asked the host when the bathrooms might be fixed since part of the price you pay is for flushing toilets she said “do I look like a plumber?!” and told us it’ll get fixed when it gets fixed, We called 2 weeks after the bathrooms closed to find out from higher ups and they said they weren’t even aware the service was out!! It’s a beautiful place, but the way we were treated was awful, the bathrooms were out the entire time we were there and the outhouse wasn’t accessible except climbing over a 2’ tall fallen tree or walking the 3 miles around it. Our party was over 30 people and multiple of us had negative interactions with the host, one lady was brought to tears because of the host demanding she pay for a second car overnight when she had only been parked there 5 minutes and had come to spend a couple hours with us to visit before returning home. A few even had run ins with the host harassing them to pay for days they weren’t even staying. Most of us went home early. Get rid of this host!!! They’re awful.
