Deschutes/Lava Lake Campground
Overview
Lava Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-desert alpine experience within the Deschutes National Forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 4,700 feet, this destination provides a serene escape for those looking to disconnect from the modern world. The park is characterized by its proximity to the water and its stunning views of the surrounding volcanic peaks, making it a staple for traditional campers and RVers who prefer a boondocking-style experience amidst mature evergreens and fresh mountain air.
Location & Surroundings
Located about 40 miles west of Bend, Oregon, the park sits along the iconic Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. The landscape is defined by the dramatic backdrop of Mount Bachelor and South Sister, which tower over the crystal-clear waters of Lava Lake. The area is rich with geological history, featuring ancient lava flows and dense forests of lodgepole pine that provide natural privacy and shade for the various campsites. The environment feels remote, yet it is easily accessible for those exploring Central Oregon.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility designed for self-contained travelers who appreciate a back-to-basics approach. While it lacks electricity or sewer hookups, it provides essential comforts such as vault toilets and potable water from hand pumps. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. A key highlight for many visitors is the on-site boat ramp, which grants easy access for motorized and non-motorized vessels alike. For additional supplies or equipment rentals, a small general store is located nearby.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in this region. The lake is a premier destination for fishing for rainbow and brook trout, while the calm waters are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Hikers can explore the nearby Six Lakes Trail or head to the Mount Bachelor area for higher-elevation treks. Beyond the water, the scenic drive along the byway leads to numerous other lakes and trailheads, offering endless opportunities for wildlife viewing and nature photography through the rugged Oregon terrain.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for RVers who value scenic solitude and outdoor recreation over resort-style luxury. It is a perfect fit for families looking to introduce children to the wonders of nature and anglers seeking easy water access. Because of the lack of hookups, it is best suited for those with solar-equipped rigs or smaller campers who are comfortable with a more traditional, off-grid Pacific Northwest adventure where the focus remains entirely on the great outdoors.

Lava lake is such a wonderful place, nestled in the heart of the Oregon Cascades with Mt Bachelor and the South Sister in full view. Great for kids and adults alike! There is so much beauty here.

had fun boating for a day. a bit pricey for a pontoon.. but had some fun with the family!. the little store was awesome. had a good selection of snacks an drinks. souvenirs were reasonably priced. parking is a bit of a walk from the store if you're gonna stay an boat for a few hours but it's nothing to bad. the forest service toilet needs attention badly. but if you can handle that an enjoy the rest of your time it's nothing but a blimp on a great day. the lake is nice to swim in lots of chub fish near the dock... Chub nets near North end of lake. cool water reeds, was told there are lava tubes the feed the lake water from the snow run off into the ground cracks way up high on the old volcanoes an mountains..

Awesome time, can’t do anything about mosquitoes, but amazing views and comfortable campsite. Just get your firewood from the Lava Lake Resort because it’s cheaper and the camp host was nowhere to be seen.
