Deschutes/Little Fawn Campground

Overview

Nestled deep within the Deschutes National Forest, Little Fawn Campground offers a tranquil retreat for RVers looking to disconnect from the modern world. Situated at an elevation of 4,900 feet near the southwestern shores of Elk Lake, this facility provides an authentic mountain experience. Unlike commercial resorts, this rustic campground focuses on preserving the natural beauty of the Oregon Cascades, making it a favorite for those who value quiet evenings under the stars over proximity to city conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 35 miles southwest of Bend, OR, the campground is accessed via the stunning Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. The landscape is defined by a dense canopy of Douglas fir and mountain hemlock, providing ample shade and privacy for each site. Because of its location in the high-altitude forest, visitors are treated to refreshing mountain air and a volcanic landscape that creates a dramatic backdrop for any camping trip throughout the summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping area, meaning visitors should arrive prepared for a dry camping experience. The park does not offer electricity, water, or sewer hookups. However, it does provide essential features for a comfortable wilderness stay:

  • Vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water stations are available throughout the loop.
  • Every site includes a heavy-duty picnic table and an established fire ring for evening gatherings.
  • Several sites feature parking spurs designed to accommodate smaller RVs and trailers, though larger rigs should check length limits.

The layout is carefully integrated into the woods, with sites spaced out to ensure a peaceful atmosphere away from the more crowded day-use areas found nearby.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is Elk Lake, which is just a short walk from the campsites. This popular destination is perfect for non-motorized boating, swimming, and fishing. For those who enjoy hiking, the nearby Pacific Crest Trail access points offer world-class trekking opportunities. Additionally, the Elk Lake Resort is close enough for guests to enjoy a meal or rent a paddleboard before returning to the quiet seclusion of their campsite.

Who This Park Is Best For

Little Fawn is ideal for off-grid enthusiasts who travel in self-contained RVs, vans, or small trailers. Since there are no hookups, it appeals to travelers who enjoy a boondocking-style experience within a managed forest setting. It is the perfect choice for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers who want a quiet basecamp for exploring the high lakes of the Cascades. If you prefer the sound of wind through the trees over the hum of a commercial park, this location fits your travel style.

Great for Paddle Boarding and an excellent place for kids to learn. Lots of creatures to explore for kids too.

A bit dry and dusty. The lake level was very low last year. A good spot if you could not get into Hosmer but want to camp in the area. NO water is available. Sites are mostly unlevel. June and July are mosquito season, so prepare appropriately. Far away enough from the resort/marina to be quiet.

Great spot right by the lake. Nice breeze and shade so it doesn't get too hot. Beautiful scenery and quiet at night. Highly recommend.

This is the first lake that we were able to take our dog and teach her how to swim.

First time camping at Little Fawn. Missed being right next to water. But only had to drive a couple miles to get to Elk lake. Only one spot for water that you have to get a work out by pumping water. So it's more of a rustic area of just being outdoors.
