Deschutes/South Shore Campground

Overview

South Shore Campground offers a serene escape within the expansive Deschutes National Forest. Located along the southern edge of the Wickiup Reservoir, this destination provides a classic Oregon camping experience for those who appreciate the great outdoors. It is a managed Forest Service site, ensuring a natural forest setting that prioritizes the environment and tranquility over commercial flash. For those traveling through the Sisters region, it represents a quiet, water-focused alternative to busier mountain resorts.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled among a towering ponderosa pine canopy that provides ample shade and a distinct forest fragrance. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the high desert terrain of Central Oregon, offering glimpses of the Cascade Range peaks in the distance. Its position directly on the reservoir makes it a prime spot for observing local wildlife and enjoying the tranquil waterfront atmosphere that defines the Deschutes area, providing a sense of seclusion from more developed corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site, meaning amenities are focused on the basics of a quality outdoor stay. Visitors will find primitive campsites without electricity or sewer connections, making it ideal for self-contained RVers who are prepared for dry camping. The park features vault toilets and seasonal potable water from hand pumps scattered throughout the loops. The most significant feature is the accessible boat ramp, which provides direct access to the water for motorized boats, kayaks, and paddle craft alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the water, with world-class fishing opportunities for kokanee and trophy-sized brown trout. Beyond the reservoir, the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. Travelers can easily reach the Metolius River or the charming western-themed town of Sisters for unique shopping and dining. Hiking trails through volcanic landscapes and lush forests are also within a short driving distance, offering endless exploration for nature lovers.

Who This Park Is Best For

South Shore is perfectly suited for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts who value peace and quiet over modern luxuries. It appeals to RVers who enjoy boondocking or dry camping and want to disconnect from the digital world in favor of nature. While it can accommodate various vehicle sizes, it is best for those seeking a rustic wilderness experience where the rhythmic sounds of the forest and the water are the main attractions of the trip.

Good dock. Definitely potholes to watch out for on your way out. Appreciate that half the lake is for motor boats and the other half for paddle sports. The lake is big enough to accommodate both.

The camp hosts were super nice, very professional, and accommodating. They were approachable even when off duty. We look forward to going back because the access was great.

Could have been a great stay except for these people who played terrible 1970s pop rock until 1 in the morning. This campsite has quiet hours and yet the camp host did absolutely nothing about the noise. What is the point of a camp host if they do nothing to enforce the rules. Terrible experience, would not recommend at all.

Lovely lake, lots of access to it. Very few power boats on it and about 1/3 of the lake is a no wake area!
