Deschutes/Trapper Creek Campground
Overview
Trapper Creek Campground offers a classic Pacific Northwest camping experience tucked away in the high elevations of the Deschutes National Forest. Located near the summit of the Cascade Mountains, this site serves as a serene retreat for those looking to escape the hustle of more developed resorts. The campground is characterized by its dense canopy of Douglas fir and hemlock trees, providing a secluded and shaded environment perfect for relaxing summer stays amidst the crisp mountain air.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near McCredie Springs and just a short distance from the pristine shores of Odell Lake, the location is a haven for water enthusiasts and mountain explorers alike. The elevation here exceeds 4,800 feet, which means visitors can enjoy cooler mountain temperatures even during the peak of July and August. The surrounding terrain is rugged and scenic, offering direct access to the vast wilderness of the Oregon Cascades and breathtaking volcanic landscapes.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on a rustic camping experience rather than modern luxuries. The park provides well-maintained vault toilets and access to potable water via hand pumps distributed throughout the loops. Each individual campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, the level parking pads can accommodate many medium-sized RVs and trailers looking for a boondocking-style adventure.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors, with Odell Lake offering premier opportunities for kokanee salmon and lake trout fishing just minutes away. Hikers can easily access segments of the Pacific Crest Trail, which winds through the nearby mountains, while those looking for a shorter excursion can visit the breathtaking Salt Creek Falls. In the winter months, the proximity to Willamette Pass makes this region a popular hub for high-altitude sightseeing and seasonal exploration.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is an ideal match for self-contained RVers who prioritize nature and tranquility over resort-style amenities and paved pads. It is a fantastic choice for outdoor photographers and hikers who want a quiet basecamp close to major trailheads and water features. If you enjoy the sound of the wind through the pines and a dark night sky for stargazing, this quiet forest gem is the perfect fit for your Oregon road trip.

Beautiful campground with many sites right on the lake! Ours went right up to a little beach. Perfect for launching our kayak.

We had a beautiful spot right on the lake. There are several spots large enough for big RVs. No electricity or sewage dump. Pit toilets were clean. Have stayed in this campground for years and will definitely stay again. Fall is our favorite time of year to stay there.

Best spot on Odell lake. Lots of things to do around the water. Always see at least one eagle. Huckleberries all over ready to pick. Kayaking is our favorite, but this is a fishing lake! A shot hike to Shelter Cove for anything from snacks to a meal. This is also a famous stop on the Pacific Crest Trail.
