Devil Creek Campground
Overview
Devil Creek Campground offers a quintessential Montana forest experience within the Flathead National Forest. Situated just south of Glacier National Park, this rustic destination provides a peaceful retreat for travelers who prefer nature over resort-style luxuries. It is a seasonal campground that highlights the rugged beauty of the Northern Rockies, making it a reliable base camp for exploring the surrounding wilderness areas while enjoying a simple, traditional camping atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
Located off Highway 2 near Essex, the campground sits at an elevation of approximately 4,400 feet. The sites are tucked into a dense forest of lodgepole pines and larch trees, offering plenty of shade and privacy. Because of its proximity to the Middle Fork Flathead River, visitors can easily access water activities or simply enjoy the sounds of the nearby wilderness. The area is also known for being active grizzly bear habitat, requiring careful food storage and awareness.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest site, the amenities focus on the basics rather than modern hookups. There are no electric, water, or sewer connections, so rigs must be self-contained. The park features vault toilets and a hand-pump for drinking water. Each site includes a picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings. Most sites are designed for smaller setups, though some can accommodate RVs up to 30 or 32 feet in length depending on the specific loop.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The biggest draw is the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, located just a short drive away. Travelers often visit the Goat Lick Overlook to spot mountain goats scaling the cliffs along the river. Hiking trails abound in the surrounding forest, and the nearby Walton Ranger Station provides historical context for the region. Anglers and rafters frequently utilize the Middle Fork of the Flathead River for world-class recreation and scenic floating throughout the summer months.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who enjoy dry camping and want to avoid the crowded corridors of the main national park. It is perfect for those traveling in smaller motorhomes or camper vans who value a quiet, forested environment. If you appreciate the sounds of a passing train on the nearby Great Northern Railway and a truly rustic Montana experience, Devil Creek will fit your travel style perfectly.

Devil Creek CG Flathead NF, MT 4400’ $22 Great place for an overnight or extended stay while exploring the Glacier National Park area as it’s in the middle of East Glacier and West Glacier right next to the road at mile marker 190 on highway 2. 13 sites all paved and each has its own bear box, picnic table and fire pit. Well water is available, 2 vault toilets and a dumpster. The campground is kept clean by the hosts Gavan and Barb taking care of the campground. Very clean!

We enjoyed our stay and would come back again! Barb and Gaven were very friendly hosts! We loved hearing Barb enjoy singing while she did her morning cleaning routine 💓 We were even treated to a homemade wildflower bouquet after sharing fresh wild huckleberries with them! The cleanest facility and put toilets we have ever seen!!

We stayed on site 6 for 2 nights. Very nice place, quiet with a creek flowing just behind our site. No services but amazingly clean pit toilets! The hosts are very friendly and they work hard to keep the campground tidy and clean. Love that the lady host (sorry forgot her name…) sings while working to clean sites and facilities. Wood at 6$/ bundle, very reasonable and sites have fire pit with a grill and a table. Potable water stations at every 2-3 sites. The only downside is that there were a lot, a lot of flies (but no mosquitos) but hey this is camping!

The devil creek campground and Flathead National forest are lucky to have a camp host like Sandy! She works hard to keep the camp ground clean and make sure every camper leaves happy! Every campground needs a host like Sandy!!!! Also the best smelling bathroom at a campground I’ve ever been too!
