Diamond Lake Park (Poweshiek County Park)
Overview
Diamond Lake Park, managed by the Poweshiek County Conservation Board, offers a peaceful retreat centered around a scenic 98-acre lake. Located just west of Montezuma, this 660-acre destination combines prairie landscapes and dense timber to create a classic Iowa outdoor experience. It is a well-maintained facility that provides a quiet atmosphere for those looking to escape the bustle of more commercialized campgrounds while enjoying natural beauty.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of rural Iowa, the park is conveniently located near Highway 63, making it accessible yet secluded. The landscape is defined by the rolling hills and diverse ecosystems characteristic of Poweshiek County. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by quiet farm country, where the nighttime sky remains dark and clear. The park acts as a sanctuary for local wildlife, making it an excellent spot for deer spotting and birdwatching.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides 77 campsites primarily equipped with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service. While the sites offer a rustic feel, the park includes modern conveniences like a heated shower building, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station. For recreation, there are multiple fishing piers and a boat ramp providing access to the lake, which is strictly managed for electric motors to preserve the tranquil environment and protect the shoreline.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw here, with the lake well-stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Beyond the water, visitors can explore two miles of hiking trails that wind through restored prairies and woodlands. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Montezuma offers local dining and historical architecture. The park is also within a reasonable drive of the Grinnell College campus, which features unique cultural attractions and a vibrant downtown area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for anglers and nature enthusiasts who prefer a slower pace of life and a connection to the land. It is an excellent choice for families seeking a safe, open environment for children to play and explore the outdoors. Because of the electric-only motor rule on the water, it specifically caters to those who value a quiet lakefront experience without the noise of jet skis or high-powered boats.

Scenic solitude! Beautiful

We were right next to the lake. It was beautiful. It's first come first serve. They have some electrical sites and some not. I believe that some even have water hook-ups. They have spots where if you were group camping then you could all be together. We watched a couple blue herons and tons of other bird catch and eat fish and bugs. Very cool. The bathrooms were clean and we'll maintained.

Being from Michigan and relocating to Iowa I have to say I really miss large amounts of freshwater. With that sudden I came across this state park that is amazing peaceful and tranquil spot to park this camper motor home. With all it has to offer I can't believe there are so many open spots!!

Absolutely beautiful! I was driving through the area and decided to find a campground to stop at for the night. This lake gave me the perfect place to get away from the noise of the freeway and enjoy a bit of nature. I got to see deer, fireflies, fish, geese and more. Very relaxing.
