Dickson Timber (Carroll County Park)

Overview

Dickson Timber, managed by the Carroll County Conservation Board, offers a secluded and serene getaway just a short drive from Glidden, Iowa. This 155-acre park is characterized by its dense hardwood forest and peaceful atmosphere, making it a hidden gem for travelers seeking a quiet break from the main highway. It provides an authentic Iowa woodland experience, preserving the natural landscape for those who appreciate a slower pace of travel and a deep connection to nature.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the heart of Carroll County, the park is situated among the rolling hills and agricultural landscapes of West Central Iowa. The environment is dominated by majestic oaks and hickories, providing deep shade and a cool canopy during the summer months. Its position near Highway 30 makes it easily accessible for passing travelers, yet the interior remains remarkably quiet, offering a true sense of seclusion amidst the vibrant Iowa timberland and local wildlife habitats.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Dickson Timber features 10 electric campsites equipped with both 30-amp and 50-amp service to accommodate a variety of RV sizes. While the facilities are intentionally rustic, featuring pit toilets and a hand pump for water, the spacious gravel sites offer plenty of room for outdoor setups. Visitors will find well-maintained fire rings and picnic tables at each site, allowing for comfortable evenings spent under the stars in a quiet, forested setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the extensive hiking trails that wind through the timber, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and wildlife spotting. Just a few miles away, the historic town of Glidden is home to the Merle Hay Gravesite, a significant local landmark. For those seeking additional recreation, Swan Lake State Park is located a short drive away, providing a larger lake for fishing, boating, and more developed recreational facilities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural beauty and tranquility over modern resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for birders, hikers, and those looking for a budget-friendly, rustic stopover in a natural environment. Lovely park with lots of interconnected paths sprawled across. My only concern is in relation to large patches of what appears to be the invasive species, Alliaria petiolata (Garlic Mustard). However, my ID skills are lacking at this time, so it's very possible I'm wrong.
