Dinosaur Natl Mon/Gates Of Lodore
Overview
Gates of Lodore is a remote, rugged campground located at the northern edge of Dinosaur National Monument. It serves as the dramatic entry point where the Green River carves through the Uinta Mountains. Unlike the developed visitor centers near the town of Dinosaur, this area offers a primitive wilderness experience characterized by towering red rock cliffs and the rushing sounds of the river. It is a bucket-list destination for those seeking solitude and raw natural beauty.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in a secluded corner of Northwest Colorado, the campground sits at the head of Lodore Canyon. The approach involves driving through the vast, open landscapes of Browns Park, often requiring travel on well-maintained gravel roads. The scenery is dominated by the Vermillion Cliffs and the dark, ancient rocks of the canyon walls. It is an isolated environment where the lack of light pollution provides some of the clearest night skies in the region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive National Park Service facility, the park focuses on basic necessities rather than luxury. RVers will find vault toilets and seasonal potable water, though there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. Each site includes a sturdy picnic table and fire ring for evening meals under the stars. The park is best suited for self-contained rigs, and visitors should arrive with a full tank of fuel and plenty of supplies, as the nearest services are many miles away.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Green River boat ramp, which serves as the launch point for multi-day rafting trips through the canyon. For those on foot, the Gates of Lodore Trail offers a scenic hike along the river edge, providing spectacular views of the gates where the water enters the deep gorge. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep an eye out for desert bighorn sheep and peregrine falcons that frequent the high cliff ledges surrounding the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-sufficient RV travelers who prioritize access to nature over modern conveniences. It is a perfect fit for photographers, hikers, and rafters who want to be at the doorstep of a national treasure. Because of the remote location and limited services, it is best for those prepared for a dry camping experience. If you value quiet mornings and a deep connection to the geological history of the West, this park is an unmatched choice.

Beautiful campground right at the river. It’s also a pullout spot for rafters but they didn’t bother me at all as I camped at site 9, the furthest from the entrance. And closest to the trail head! Trail was super easy after a short initial ascent. Great spots

Amazing! Two very clean bathrooms with motion sensor lights, river and boat access, beautiful short trail with family friendly guide, big camping spots, lots of water spigots and drop dead gorgeous! Bring your river fishing gear and your s’mores because you won’t want to leave.

Very beautiful area. Plenty of camping available at $10/night. There is a short hiking trail that is not dog friendly or well shaded. The trail has rocky inclines. Many main trails in Dinosaur National Monument are not dog friendly (some are!!) so plan before you visit. Make sure you pack plenty water and sunscreen. There is a pamphlet for $1 at the start of the trail that explains the 16 points signed on the trail. There are very scenic and historic views here.

Quiet. Two boat trips launched. Chilly breezes, but still enjoyed tee shirt weather.

It's definitely dated! Not really pet friendly. About the only place you can have your pet is in a camp spot or on the boat ramp. That being said it's a 10 for it's beauty and history!
