Dollar Lake

Overview

Dollar Lake Provincial Park offers a peaceful retreat into the lush woodlands of Nova Scotia. Situated around a pristine freshwater lake, this park is a favorite for those seeking a natural escape without traveling too far from major urban centers. It provides a classic provincial park experience where the focus remains on the great outdoors and family-oriented recreation. The park is well-regarded for its clean environment and the tranquil atmosphere that defines the Nova Scotian interior.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the community of Wyses Corner, the park is approximately an hour’s drive from the bustling city of Halifax. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense Acadian forests and rolling hills, providing a quiet buffer from highway noise and city lights. The centerpiece of the park is the lake itself, featuring a wide sandy beach that is widely considered one of the premier freshwater swimming spots in the entire region, drawing visitors throughout the summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 100 campsites, including a selection of serviced sites that provide water and electrical hookups catering specifically to RV travelers. Facilities are designed for comfort and convenience, featuring modern comfort stations equipped with flush toilets and hot showers. For those with larger rigs, there is a dedicated dump station on-site. Key recreational features include:

  • A supervised swimming area available during peak summer dates.
  • A convenient boat launch for canoes, kayaks, and small motorboats.
  • Several wooded hiking trails that offer glimpses of local flora and fauna.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the lake is the primary draw, visitors often explore the scenic Musquodoboit Valley for its hiking trails and local artisan shops. For a unique day trip, the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park is located nearby, offering an educational look at native Atlantic Canadian wildlife. Additionally, the park’s proximity to Halifax allows travelers to easily access historic sites like the Citadel or the waterfront boardwalk before returning to the quiet of the woods for the evening.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize water-based activities such as swimming, kayaking, and fishing. Because the park offers a blend of wooded privacy and easy beach access, it appeals to RVers who prefer a scenic and quiet atmosphere over the bustling amenities of a commercial resort. It is also an excellent home base for those who want to experience the natural beauty of Nova Scotia's heartland while staying within reach of the airport.

We had a great time here this summer, it was nice we were able to rent a canoe right at the beach. Also having a canteen with some food is awesome. Unfortunately the beach with sand is very little so filled up fast not great for swimming. Also zero cell phone reception.

I have avoided this park for years after going camping there when it first opened and was eaten alive my mosquitoes, but today we went back for a walk as part of the "Walk The Waterway" challenge. The park has not aged well and except for nice new showers everything was looking a bit run down. Campsites are large but do not look well maintained. There were no staff on hand at all, and signage was lacking. we were looking for hiking trails, and there was not even a central map sign, and the trails were hard to find. The roads are in terrible shape with uneven surfaces and deep potholes. BUT, there were no mosquitoes . . . . .

Awesome day at the beach. One of the easiest beaches to access. With physical limitations we need ramps around stairs like this beach has. Washroom was clean. There are lots of shade trees beside the beach for those of us that need it. Because it is inland it often is warmer than other beaches in the early part of the season. Yesterday it was the only one of eight beaches I checked that had sunshine and warm temperatures. Pictures taken from the little island that is next to the beach. Ate our lunch on the island. Beautiful scenery

Dollar Lake Provincial Park is located in Wyses Corner, Nova Scotia. From Halifax it can be reached by taking exit 5A on HWY 102 and following HWY 212 or Old Guysborough Rd towards Middle Musquodoboit. Dollar Lake is the part of Dollar Lake Provincial Park. If you are lucky enough you may witness Snapping Turtles in the lake. The provincial park has well maintained main beach at the Dollar Lake and there’s another beach at Olivers Cove called Campers Beach on the same lake. The park offers public changing rooms, restrooms and a big parking lot. The park also has a well maintained camping ground. The entry to the beach side is free but not sure about the camping.

Beautiful park with two beaches. Open and wooded campsites. Many of the sites are unique due to geography or even the layout of the site. I keep a notebook with a list of cool sites I'd like to stay at next time. There are no hook ups at any of the sites at this campground. Visited the last weekend of September. There were a few campers but it was not crowded by any means. Sky at night is breathtaking. Firewood is $5/bundle and was dry. Cell service is poor here but who needs internet in their RV when there's a campfire outside. Good times.
