Dolliver Memorial

Overview

Dolliver Memorial State Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance in Central Iowa. Named after Jonathan P. Dolliver, the park spans over 450 acres along the Des Moines River. It is famous for its towering sandstone bluffs and historic structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, providing a peaceful retreat for RVers seeking a quiet, natural setting away from the bustle of city life. This park is a hidden gem for those who appreciate unique geological formations alongside well-preserved history.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Fort Dodge in Lehigh, IA, the park is defined by the Des Moines River valley. The landscape is dramatically different from the typical Iowa prairie, featuring deep ravines and lush woodlands that offer a sense of seclusion. Travelers will appreciate the scenic river views and the winding roads that lead through the park’s rugged terrain, creating an immersive forest experience that feels more like a hidden canyon than a Midwestern plain.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides electric hookups for RV travelers across most of its sites, catering to modern comfort while maintaining a rustic atmosphere. Visitors have access to modern restrooms and shower facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay in the heart of nature. Featured amenities include:

  • Modern restrooms and showers
  • A convenient sanitary dump station for RVs
  • Historic stone lodges and picnic shelters

While the sites offer a more traditional wooded feel, the presence of these well-maintained facilities provides a balanced experience for self-contained travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy exploring Bone Yard Hollow, a unique geological area where ancient artifacts were discovered. The park offers several miles of hiking trails that lead to the Copperas Beds, which are unusual sandstone formations rising high above the creek bed. Fishing and canoeing on the Des Moines River are popular activities, and the nearby city of Fort Dodge offers additional dining and cultural attractions for those who want to explore beyond the park boundaries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and history buffs who prefer a quiet, scenic environment over a bustling resort. It is a fantastic destination for families looking to explore local geology and for RVers who enjoy bird watching and hiking. If you appreciate a smaller, more intimate campground with plenty of shade and unique natural landmarks, Dolliver Memorial State Park is an excellent choice for your Iowa travel itinerary.

This is truely a nice state park. There are no city noises at all, as this park is away from that nestled out near famland and small towns. Quite the gem! They have cabins too.

Great place to camp, fish, nature walks, and have picnics with friends and family. Great place for get togethers and reunions. Spotty cell phone service.

This is a beautiful park, but the information about the trails isn't easy to find. Go to the campground area, and there are maps near the check-in station. The trails aren't well marked, but you can figure it out... beautiful views of the Des Moines river, Prairie Creek, and limestone cliffs.
