Eagle Cliff Campground & Lodging

Overview

Eagle Cliff Campground & Lodging offers a scenic retreat nestled in the heart of the Root River Valley. This destination provides a balanced mix of traditional camping and modern lodging options, making it a popular choice for those exploring Southeast Minnesota. Visitors often find themselves surrounded by majestic limestone bluffs and the gentle sounds of the nearby river, creating a peaceful environment that feels far removed from city life while remaining accessible to local charm. The park maintains a relaxed, nature-focused atmosphere that highlights the beauty of the driftless region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just minutes from downtown Lanesboro, the park sits directly on the banks of the Root River. The landscape is defined by towering cliffs and lush hardwood forests that change beautifully with the seasons. Its most significant geographical advantage is the immediate access to the Root River State Trail, a premier paved path that winds through the valley. This location allows travelers to explore the scenic vistas of the area without ever needing to start their engines, as the trail connects several historic small towns.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to diverse needs with spacious RV sites featuring full hookups and reliable utility service. For those traveling with different equipment or companions, the property also includes a motel and primitive tent areas. Guests can take advantage of the following features:

  • Clean restrooms and hot shower facilities
  • On-site river rentals for tubing, canoeing, and kayaking
  • A well-stocked camp store with essentials and firewood

The layout is designed to maximize the views of the river and the bluffs, ensuring that every site feels connected to the outdoors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this area. Guests can spend their days biking the 60-mile trail system or fly fishing for trout in the cold-water streams that crisscross the valley. Downtown Lanesboro, known for its vibrant arts scene, offers professional theater at the Commonweal Theatre and several local galleries. Exploring the Mystery Cave State Park or taking a scenic drive through the surrounding Amish countryside provides unique cultural and natural insights just a short distance from your campsite.

Who This Park Is Best For

Eagle Cliff is an ideal match for active outdoor enthusiasts who want to spend their days on the water or the trail. It appeals strongly to cyclists and paddlers who value direct access to recreation. The park is also well-suited for families and couples looking for a quiet, scenic getaway where they can disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the bluff country. If you prefer a tranquil setting with easy access to small-town culture and historic charm, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

We love Eagle Cliff Campground in Lanesboro. We’ve gone every year for over 20 years. Beautiful scenery, mosquito free, the river is amazing for tubing and kayaking. Family friendly and fun place for all!

Beautiful campground, well-kept, super clean and quiet. We stayed here in 2021 and finally made it back cuz' we loved it. We rode the Root River trail again, which is a pretty short 1/4 mile trip along the road to get from the campground to the trailhead in Whalan, but in Whalan there is the Pie Shop, so there's a bonus for you pie freaks out there!

Love this campground. Friendly office staff. Clean, large sites that are easy to maneuver in and out of. Clean restrooms. Fun activities over the summer. (including kayak, canoe, and bike rentals) Easy access to Great bike path.

We had RV spot but looked at the rooms and they were simple but very clean and connecting! This campground is beautiful! They had entertainment for Labor Day weekend with food truck. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else and can’t wait to come back. Also, very centrally located to many towns on the bake trail.

We LOVED our stay at this pristine campground! Friendly staff and beautiful location. We very much enjoyed our stay and will be booking a week next year. Best place for River and Biking. Peaceful and quiet. Our friends enjoyed their cabin stay as well. Oh and the grass is beautiful. Can’t say enough good things. Only Con: Seasonal Sites and their Golf Carts. During the 70s night one man, clearly intoxicated, almost hit my child by backing into her while she rode her bike (on the very edge of the ride) so they could do their “parade.” It was very scary. Not first run in with irresponsible and dangerous golf cart use during that week stay. Consider banning use of alcohol and golf cart use. This should be no different than drinking and driving.
