Eagle Trail
Overview
Eagle Trail State Recreation Site offers a peaceful, forested retreat just south of Tok, Alaska. This state park provides a classic Alaskan camping experience for those traveling along the Glenn Highway. It serves as a significant historical site, marking a portion of the original Valdez-to-Fairbanks trail used by gold seekers and mail carriers. Today, the park offers 35 spacious campsites nestled among spruce and birch trees, providing a quiet, natural alternative to the busier commercial parks found in the region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at Mile 131.4 of the Glenn Highway, the park is conveniently located about 16 miles south of the Tok junction. The surroundings are characterized by the boreal forest ecosystem and the dramatic backdrop of the Alaska Range. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a serene landscape where the crisp mountain air and the sounds of nature dominate. The park layout takes advantage of the natural topography, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining easily accessible for those transiting between the Matanuska Valley and the interior.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state recreation site, the focus here is on natural beauty rather than modern luxuries. The park features well-maintained gravel pads suitable for various RV sizes, though travelers with very large rigs should navigate with care. Essential facilities include hand-pumped potable water, latrines, and a picnic shelter. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and a sturdy table for outdoor dining. While there are no utility hookups, the park provides a dedicated dump station for guest convenience, making it a functional stop for self-contained travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The highlight of the park is the namesake Eagle Trail, which offers hikers a chance to explore the historic route once traversed by early pioneers. For those seeking more adventure, the nearby Tok River provides opportunities for fishing and wildlife viewing. A short drive into the town of Tok allows visitors to explore the Mainstreet Alaska Visitors Center or learn about local dog mushing traditions. The park also serves as an excellent base for exploring the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, where birdwatching and vast tundra landscapes await.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for independent RV travelers who prefer the tranquility of the Alaskan wilderness over the amenities of a traditional resort. It is perfect for those who enjoy dry camping and want to experience the state history firsthand. Hikers and nature photographers will appreciate the immediate access to forested trails and scenic overlooks. If you are looking for a restful overnight stop or a quiet basecamp to explore the eastern interior, Eagle Trail provides the perfect blend of accessibility and rustic charm.

Nice, quiet, rustic campground a little south of Tok. The pit toilets appear to be newly renovated. We are here in late June and it is mostly empty … not sure why since it is easily accessible.

A nice campsite with 2 hiking trails. 1 leads to a lookout - around 1.5Mi, the other is a loop of around 0.9Mi. Good pastime, beautiful nature and forest. And there are squirrels everywhere :-)

Was a nice area, though it seemed like it gets little use. The creek right behind the campsites is beautiful. Bugs can be bad. Bathrooms were clean. Water only at the front. Has a few pull through sites but they aren't huge
