Overview

Ed Henning County Park offers a tranquil retreat along the banks of the Muskegon River. As a premier destination within the Newaygo County Parks system, this park captures the essence of West Michigan’s natural beauty. It serves as a popular hub for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a well-maintained environment where the sound of the water provides a constant, calming backdrop for their camping adventures and evening campfires. The park is widely recognized for its clean facilities and its ability to provide a true escape into nature without leaving the convenience of the local community too far behind.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of the City of Newaygo, the park is nestled within a lush canopy of mature trees. Its prime location on the river makes it a gateway to the famous Muskegon River Valley, known for its scenic bluffs and diverse wildlife. Travelers will find themselves conveniently close to local grocery stores and shops while feeling completely immersed in the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding hardwood forest and riverbank ecosystems. The park acts as a secluded pocket of wilderness that remains easily accessible for large RVs and trailers.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a range of facilities designed to enhance the RV experience. Most sites feature 30-amp electrical hookups, and the park maintains clean, modern restrooms and hot showers for guest comfort. Boaters and anglers will appreciate the paved boat launch, providing easy access to the river's prime fishing spots. Additionally, the park includes a playground for children, a sanitary dump station for RVs, and expansive picnic areas. These amenities ensure that while the setting is rustic, the practical needs of the modern camper are well met.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Activity at Ed Henning centers on the water, with salmon and steelhead fishing being a primary draw for seasonal visitors. Beyond the park, the nearby Dragon Trail at Hardy Dam offers world-class mountain biking and hiking opportunities for those seeking more land-based adventure. For travelers looking for a slower pace, tubing or paddling down the Muskegon River provides a relaxing way to spend a summer afternoon. The historic charm of downtown Newaygo is also just a short drive away, offering local eateries and unique shopping experiences.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for avid anglers and paddlers who want immediate river access from their home base. It also appeals to families seeking a traditional Michigan camping experience without sacrificing essential modern necessities like electricity and showers. My family rents the cabins in the campground once or twice a year. We love being right by the river. Dogs are welcome in the park but not the cabins. We will be back again.

Fairly clean restrooms for a county park. Large campsites. Great place to get out after putting in at thornapple. About a 3 and half hour trip. Camp host was friendly and helpful and rode around looking for a pair of sunglasses that someone in our group lost. They have volleyball, baseball, pickleball, and a great disc golf course.

The playground equipment is ancient. Only thing for children to do is the sandbox. No handicap accessible showers or bathrooms.

Warning⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ we are being robbed !!!!!!!!! If you pay for 2 nights of camping, you olny get to camp for 1 night, and they make you leave on the second night . For example .. I booked 2 nights of camping for August 1st and 2nd chenk in is by 3pm on the 1st, after paying for 2 night @ $23 per night, I was informed on the 1st of August that I have to leave on 2nd of August by 1 pm. That is less then 24 hours 🤨 . Please correct me if wrong ? 🤔 that is olny one night of camping, because on the first day, by the time you set up your camp It's time for dinner. That doesn't give you much time to play on the river.😒 On the 2nd day, you have a half of a day to pack up and leave.🤔 Other than that , it's a very nice campground, with a small playground, a fairly nice shower house with 4 private shower rooms. It is pet friendly, with large sites, nestled along side of The muskegon river. The guests were very friendly. I didn't see much of the staff. until they called the police on me for trust passing, after I showed them my receipt that i had booked and paid for augest 4-16. They told me I would get refundedmoney I paid for the 🏕 site . I still have not seen any refund 😒 P.S. I made some new friends 🧡. I apologize, I'm really bad at remembering names. Oliver is the only name I can remember. so I'd like to give a big shout-out to my new friend Oliver and his beautiful family, the Rollinhagens ! Sincerely Roxy
