El Capitan State Beach

Overview

El Capitan State Beach offers a quintessential California coastal experience, where lush groves of sycamore and oak trees meet the sandy shores of the Pacific Ocean. Unlike many commercial RV parks, this state beach provides a rugged and immersive natural setting located just north of Santa Barbara. Visitors can enjoy the sound of crashing waves and the shade of mature trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere for a weekend getaway or a scenic stop on a coastal road trip.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Goleta, CA, the park is nestled between the majestic Santa Ynez Mountains and the deep blue waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. The location is famous for its coastal bluffs and tide pools, offering a diverse landscape for exploration. The park feels secluded and remote, yet it is conveniently located right off Highway 101, making it an accessible destination for RVers traveling through Central California’s stunning coastline.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park focuses on a rustic experience, it provides essential features for comfortable dry camping. There are no hookups available, so RVers should arrive with full water tanks and empty waste tanks. The sites include paved pads, sturdy picnic tables, and fire rings for evening gatherings. On-site facilities include restrooms with flush toilets and token-operated showers. A seasonal camp store provides basic supplies, ice, and firewood for your stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Bill Wallace Trail, which offers expansive views of the coastline and backcountry. A paved bike path connects El Capitan to the nearby Refugio State Beach, perfect for a morning ride. For those seeking culture and dining, the vibrant city of Santa Barbara is just a short drive south. You can also explore the Santa Ynez Valley wine country or visit the charming Danish village of Solvang, located nearby.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for nature lovers and surfers who prioritize scenery and outdoor access over modern resort amenities. It is a favorite for families looking to disconnect and spend time exploring tide pools or hiking coastal trails. Because there are no hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy a more traditional, boondocking-style camping experience under the California stars.

great campgrounds, perfect for families and nature lovers. We joined a group of friends to spend the weekend at El Capitan and we were happy with the location, cleanliness, water availability and overall site condition.

Had a great time walking the short trail along the beachside. Its a small beach. Parking is $10, restrooms are decent. Shoreline is super pretty but tons of piled up beach wood, which is fine if that's a thing you enjoy. Two small picknick areas with with benches and grills. Lots of rocks, not a lot of rock free sand (which again, totally fine).

Great little state beach. A little surfing action. Lots of migrant birds and wildlife... Little lizards, beautiful flowers and vegetation.. eucalyptus trees! Nice bathrooms, too.

went along with group, was pretty secluded! went for 2 days and it was good. my group had a small part of the beach secluded that was connected to the campsite which made the experience 10 times more better! would go again definitely

Large, very loud groups of people that ignore the camp host. Partying until well after midnight. No Ranger patrols at anytime. When I complain at the front gate office they always say they will look into it but they never do.
