El Vado Lake

Overview

El Vado Lake State Park offers a rugged and scenic retreat in the beautiful mountains of northern New Mexico. Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,900 feet, this state park is celebrated for its **stunning water views** and incredibly peaceful atmosphere. While it provides a more rustic experience compared to modern luxury resorts, it serves as a vital gateway for those exploring the Rio Chama Valley. It is a unique destination where the high desert meets the reservoir, providing a quiet backdrop for nature enthusiasts.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the historic community of Tierra Amarilla, the park is surrounded by a dense landscape of **juniper and pinyon pine forests**. The geographic area is defined by its proximity to the Rio Chama, which feeds directly into the reservoir. Travelers reaching this destination will find themselves fully immersed in a high-altitude environment characterized by dramatic rocky outcrops and wide-open southwestern skies. The area remains relatively remote, offering a true escape from the noise of city life while remaining accessible via **scenic New Mexico highways**.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to RVers looking for a functional blend of convenience and traditional camping. It features various campsites equipped with **electrical hookups**, though many sites remain primitive to preserve the authentic natural feel of the wilderness. Park features include the following:

  • Visitors can access multiple **designated boat ramps** for water-based recreation and easy shoreline access.
  • The park offers several developed trailheads that lead directly into the surrounding mountain wilderness areas.
  • Comfortable picnic shelters are available for families and group gatherings near the water.

Because the park emphasizes a deep connection to the environment, the layout encourages outdoor living. It is vital for visitors to arrive prepared with supplies, as the primary focus here is on **recreational lake access** and the undisturbed tranquility of the northern shoreline.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors, with opportunities for boating, fishing for kokanee salmon, and kayaking. A major highlight for active travelers is the **5.5-mile scenic trail** that connects El Vado Lake to the neighboring Heron Lake State Park, offering hikers breathtaking views of the Rio Chama gorge. Just a short drive north, the historic town of Chama provides a unique chance to ride the **Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad**, a famous narrow-gauge steam train traversing the San Juan Mountains.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for **boaters and anglers** seeking a reliable basecamp for water-based adventures in a serene, high-mountain setting. It is also a perfect fit for dry campers and RVers who prefer a **quiet, rustic environment** rather than the crowded atmosphere of amenity-heavy resorts. If you enjoy incredibly dark night skies for stargazing and a slower pace of life, El Vado Lake offers the solitude you desire. It is best suited for travelers with self-contained rigs who value natural beauty.

This reservoir is being kept really really low due to maintenance problems and the only fish are carp. So basically the campground is open but the main event (The Lake) is no bueno. Staff says been this way a number of years and will be for likely many more. Not worth the time IMO

Friendly and helpful owners! Unfortunately rv park was closed for winter season, unable to push my vehicle/camper up the rocky hill, Dave was kind to get out of his way and help out! Beautiful view and affordable rates, just go in the right season!

Delightful day trip with loads of beautiful scenery, great staff and a memorable train experience moving between the cars and a great lunch stop refueling is for the servings half of the day.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The camp host and ranger were super nice, friendly, and helpful. It was absolutely gorgeous! The only real issue is that the lake water is so low that they only turn the water on in the campground from 3:30pm-6pm. So, if you want to use the flushing toilets, showers, your water spigot, and/or fill up your tanks, that's when you do it. They do have vault toilets that are really clean. Also, if you have T-Mobile service, there is none there. Zero. But, overall, we really enjoyed our stay here.
