Eldorado/China Flat
Overview
China Flat Campground, nestled within the expansive Eldorado National Forest, offers a classic Sierra Nevada camping experience that feels worlds away from the city. Situated directly alongside the scenic South Fork American River, it provides a serene riverside setting for those looking to disconnect from technology and noise. This is a rustic destination where the soothing sound of rushing water and the fresh scent of towering ponderosa pines define the atmosphere for every RVer.
Location & Surroundings
Located just off Highway 50 near the small mountain community of Kyburz, the park serves as an accessible gateway to the high Sierras. The campground is nestled within a steep-walled canyon, which provides generous natural shade and a sense of true mountain seclusion. The South Fork American River is the focal point of the landscape, offering refreshing views and a natural habitat for local wildlife right at your doorstep.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service facility, the amenities are intentionally simple and geared toward self-contained travelers who enjoy dry camping. Each site typically includes the following features:
- Sturdy picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings.
- Access to potable water via seasonal hand pumps or hydrants.
- Standard vault toilets maintained for cleanliness throughout the season.
There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, so campers should arrive prepared for a primitive dry camping experience without a dump station on-site.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Pony Express National Historic Trail, which offers rugged hiking opportunities just a short distance away. The river provides excellent rainbow trout fishing for those with a valid license, while the nearby Silver Fork offers even more water access. For a day trip, travelers can easily drive east to experience the world-class views and alpine lakes of the Desolation Wilderness area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is absolutely ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts and travelers who prefer a rugged, authentic forest experience over a paved resort. Because the access roads and pads have specific length limitations, it is best suited for owners of small to mid-sized trailers, camper vans, or truck campers. It is a perfect match for those seeking a quiet, off-the-grid retreat to recharge amidst the granite peaks of Northern California.

China flat has been the place I grew up going to as a child. Now my children are growing up as China flat being their camping spot. China flat is beautiful, the camp hosts are amazing, the facility is clean and even though small for a camping spot it has been amazing to grow up here. Weather you want to get up early with the birds to fish, do a little white water tubing, swim in the amazing swimming hole or just go exploring this place has it al !!! Happy camping

Great camping experience at China Flat campgrounds. Fishing was good just 2 miles up the road towards Silver Fork campgrounds. Campgrounds were clean and quiet throughout the week and we enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend these campgrounds. Great river access for rafting in inner tubes.

Great campground. Most sites aren't right next to each other, though some are such as the ones down by the river. We had #8, so we were decently far from other camp sites. The restrooms are regularly maintained and toilet paper is well stocked. Most campers around us were quiet at 9pm or 10pm but on Friday & Saturday night, there was a large group near site #6 that were loud up until 11pm or so. Thankfully #8 was decently far from them, though I feel bad for people that were near them. And on Sunday evening had a family by the water on site #17 or #18 that was laughing and talking like it was daytime up until 12:30am. I had thought about notifying the host but I didn't want to bother them. Overall we had a good camping experience, we had stayed for 4 nights in total(Checked in Thursday, Left Monday morning.) Firewood is decently priced all things considered. However if you're able to, bringing your own firewood wouldn't hurt. Though if you plan to come on Friday or Saturday, best come early as since the sites fill up FAST!!!
