Eldorado/Gerle Creek
Overview
Gerle Creek Campground is a cherished destination within the Eldorado National Forest, offering a tranquil retreat from the hustle of modern life. Located at an elevation of approximately 5,200 feet, this facility provides an authentic mountain experience while remaining accessible for various RV sizes. The atmosphere is defined by the towering pines and the gentle flow of the nearby water, creating a sense of isolation and peace that characterizes the Crystal Basin Recreation Area for generations of travelers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated north of Pollock Pines, California, the campground is nestled along the shores of the Gerle Creek Reservoir. The surrounding landscape is a lush tapestry of coniferous forests and granite outcroppings typical of the Sierra Nevada. Visitors are treated to cool mountain air and a landscape that feels untouched, with the reservoir providing a stunning reflective backdrop for morning coffee or evening strolls. The drive along Ice House Road offers breathtaking vistas before reaching this secluded forested pocket.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a well-maintained dry camping facility that prioritizes the natural environment over modern hookups. The sites feature paved parking spurs, which is a significant plus for RVers navigating mountain terrain and looking for a level setup. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring with a grill for evening campfires. While there are no electric or water hookups, the park provides potable water via seasonal faucets and well-kept vault toilets. The campground is also noted for its accessible design, featuring several sites modified for better mobility.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the reservoir, which is restricted to non-motorized boating, making it a haven for kayakers, paddleboarders, and canoeists seeking glassy water. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck with the local trout population in both the creek and the reservoir. For those who prefer land-based activities, the Gerle Creek Trail offers an easy, accessible hike that follows the water's edge. Nearby, the larger Union Valley Reservoir provides options for those seeking motorized water sports or more extensive hiking trail systems.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for travelers who value quiet and serenity over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a safe, calm environment where children can bike on paved loops or explore the water safely. Because of its accessible features and strict no-motors policy on the water, it attracts nature photographers, birdwatchers, and those looking to disconnect from technology to reconnect with the natural beauty of the High Sierra.

Best campground ever. Awesome hosts, beautiful lake and clean sites. I also love playing the flute there. Been going there for over 20 years.

I have been coming here for 20+ years. Nice to see the trail upgrades that are now accessible to all with many ADA sections. There are many campsites and even some specific for RVs. There is beach hangouts and a boardwalk that goes out into the water. The island in the middle of the lake is great for jumping. Awesome creek to hike and explore. Great fishing and potable water!!! I bring my skateboard the pavement is so nice. Safe place for kids and pets though there can be bears at night. There are bear box’s. That all said, in the 20+ years I have been going here with my family, I have never had a bear issue.

Lovely clean campground, helpful hosts, bathrooms were very clean. Beautiful peaceful serene place. I think the forest service is trying to be a cashless system but cash should always be accepted, i almost always camp first come first serve and when thens no cell service it’s the only way to pay. Amazing hikes all around lovely place to unplug and unwind. Was nice to be there mid week.

The stereotypical family summer vacation retreat. Family, friends, kids, their dogs and possibly cats camping on or near the water. No motors on this reservoir. It's still hot at this elevation, but the shade from all the trees trumps it; the cool water trumps it. So many other camp grounds are barren of shade aside from the shadow I cast. Please stop milling about near me. My favorite thing to do is make my way out to the island. An excellent rock there challenges jumping fears from 5'-20'. Toss the ball to your dog or any of the other shameless canine ball thieves. Still spilling far too much of my carbonated beverage when I throw the ball. Shame! With the kids I prefer to be in a camp spot closer to the water for obvious reasons. If you have a pickup truck or mule like family member to carry your kayaks, rafts, floaties and coolers then any camp spot is fine. Most just leave their toys tied up near the shore with little concern of them coming up missing. Really enjoyed our last stay in 36. Very close walk to the creek, reservoir and facilities. Have yet to meet friendly's counterpart here. Time to free up some calendar space.

Oh my goodness!!!! I love this place! Want to keep it a secret. So campground is kept so clean. The area is so gorgeous and the water sparkles, literally. Great place if you like peace and quiet, and are respectful of nature, wildlife, conservation, the environment and your fellow humans. Love it.
