Eldorado/Silver Fork

Overview

Eldorado/Silver Fork offers a serene escape within the vast Eldorado National Forest. Located along the scenic corridor of Highway 50, this destination serves as a classic mountain retreat for those seeking a primitive camping experience. Unlike modern resorts, this park emphasizes a deep connection with nature, providing a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the wind through the pines and the rushing river take center stage. It is an ideal spot for travelers looking to trade digital distractions for starlight and fresh mountain air.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Kyburz, California, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 4,600 feet, nestled among towering ponderosa pines and cedars. The most defining feature of the area is its proximity to the South Fork American River and the Silver Fork tributary. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged granite outcroppings and dense forest canopies. Because it is located halfway between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe, it offers a perfect base for exploring the high Sierra while remaining tucked away from the high-traffic tourist hubs.

Amenities & Park Features

Travelers should prepare for a traditional dry camping experience, as the park focuses on preserving its natural environment. The primary amenities include:

  • Spacious campsites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings.
  • Access to vault toilets and localized water spigots throughout the grounds.
  • Dedicated parking spurs designed to accommodate smaller RVs, camper vans, and trailers.
While there are no electrical or water hookups, the park provides a sense of privacy and space that is often missing from more developed RV parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a paradise for outdoor recreation. Anglers frequent the riverbanks to test their luck fishing for rainbow and brown trout in the cool mountain waters. Hikers can access portions of the historic Pony Express Trail, which offers a glimpse into California’s frontier past. For those willing to drive a short distance, the world-renowned climbing walls of Lover’s Leap are just minutes away, and the vibrant shores of South Lake Tahoe are accessible for a day trip of boating or sightseeing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is best suited for self-contained RVers and van lifers who enjoy boondocking or primitive stays. Due to the tight turns and natural terrain, it is a favorite for those with smaller rigs or off-road trailers rather than large motorhomes. It is the perfect choice for nature photographers and hikers who prioritize immediate trail access over luxury amenities. If your travel style involves campfire cooking and waking up to the sounds of the forest, Eldorado/Silver Fork will exceed your expectations.

Absolutely wonderful camp host. Lots of spots to choose from, first come first serve all of them. River is stunning but very cold. Restrooms clean and sometimes firewood is free.

Fire damaged area, but campground beautiful. Clean and well taken care of, clean bathrooms. River cold as expected. Didn't try fishing. First time here, loved this place. Great camp host. Road to hwy 50 pretty bad. Would not recommend RV or trailer until cleaned up. 88 side better. I will be back.

A number of campers (RVers) seem to think everyone in the campground want to be blinded by their ultra bright lanterns. Are they afraid of the dark? If so, they should stay home, not annoy everyone else.
