Eldorado/Silver Lake
Overview
Eldorado Silver Lake, nestled within the Eldorado National Forest, offers a serene high-altitude escape for RVers seeking a traditional mountain experience. Located at an elevation of approximately 7,200 feet, this destination provides a cool respite from the valley heat during the summer months. The park is characterized by its stunning granite landscapes and the shimmering blue waters of Silver Lake, creating a quintessential Sierra Nevada backdrop for your outdoor adventures.
Location & Surroundings
Situated along the scenic Highway 88 corridor, the park is part of the Crystal Springs area and is surrounded by ancient lodgepole pines and rugged peaks. The proximity to the lake allows for easy access to the water edge, where the reflections of the Sierra crest create a peaceful atmosphere. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a wilderness environment that feels remote yet is accessible via well-maintained mountain roads, offering a true alpine getaway away from city noise.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility focused on the natural environment, meaning visitors should prepare for dry camping experiences. The park provides several essential features to ensure a comfortable stay:
- Vault toilets and piped drinking water are available throughout the campground loops.
- Each campsite includes a heavy-duty bear box for secure and mandatory food storage.
- Individual sites are equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a steel fire ring.
While there are no sewer or electrical hookups, the spacious layouts and natural shade make it a comfortable base camp for self-contained RV units looking to fully disconnect and enjoy the fresh air.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with Silver Lake serving as a hub for trout fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. For those who prefer land-based activities, the area is home to numerous trailheads leading into the Mokelumne Wilderness, including the popular hike to Granite Lake. Nearby Kirkwood Mountain Resort offers additional summer activities, while the historic Carson Pass provides breathtaking vista points and wildflower displays that are famous throughout Northern California.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style amenities. Because of the winding mountain roads and specific site dimensions, it is most suited for small to mid-sized motorhomes and travel trailers. It is a perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy waking up to mountain air and spending their days hiking, fishing, or simply relaxing by the water in one of California’s most scenic forest settings.

We had such a wonderful stay! Our camp host, Hobie, was amazing—friendly, hilarious, and made us feel right at home. We were lucky to snag a spot on the last weekend the campground was open, and it couldn’t have been a better experience. Grizzly and Luna (our two pups) had the best time exploring, and we loved how quiet, clean, and family-friendly the site was. The bathrooms were honestly the cleanest I’ve ever seen at a campground! We highly recommend this spot and can’t wait to come back next year.

What a great campground, made even more enjoyable by the fantastic friendly informative host, Hobie 😍. Our group really enjoyed staying there for the very last weekend of the 2025 camping season. Hope Hobie is there when we come back again! Fingers crossed water becomes available for 2026.

Incredible campground, with great places, good sanitation, and very nice and fun hosts. Super close to some beautiful areas and on a walking distance to some natural pitholes and the Silver Lake. I came for bouldering specifically, and it's within ~30 minutes of driving from some of the best bouldering you can do around Lake Tahoe. Highly recommend staying here.
