Elkhead Reservoir
Overview
Elkhead Reservoir State Park serves as a refreshing oasis within the high-desert landscape of Northwest Colorado. Centered around a 900-acre reservoir, the park offers a serene escape for travelers who prioritize nature over commercial luxury. The Bears Ears Campground provides a rustic setting for RVers to park their rigs while enjoying direct access to water recreation. This park is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, ensuring a well-maintained environment that highlights the natural beauty and local wildlife of the Moffat and Routt county border.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 10 miles northeast of the town of Craig, the park is tucked away among rolling sagebrush hills and expansive vistas. The surrounding topography offers wide-open skies that are perfect for stargazing after the sun sets behind the Elkhead Mountains. Because of its slightly remote position, the atmosphere remains quiet and peaceful, providing a distinct contrast to the more crowded mountain resorts further east. Visitors will appreciate the sense of solitude that comes with the vast, open horizons of this high-elevation plateau.
Amenities & Park Features
The camping facilities at Elkhead Reservoir are designed for those who enjoy a more self-sufficient travel style. The park features 16 campsites at the Bears Ears loop, which are suitable for both RVs and tents. It is important to note that these are primitive dry-camping sites without electricity or water hookups. However, the park provides essential conveniences such as vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables at each site. Boaters benefit from a well-maintained boat ramp and a designated swimming beach, which is a rare find in this region of Colorado.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based activities are the primary draw for visitors here. The reservoir is a premier destination for fishing, known specifically for its northern pike and smallmouth bass populations. Paddleboarding and kayaking are also popular ways to explore the shoreline. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Craig offers the Museum of Northwest Colorado, which houses an impressive collection of pioneer and cowboy artifacts. Additionally, the Yampa River State Park is a short drive away, offering further opportunities for river rafting and bird watching along the valley floor.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want to stay as close to the water as possible. Because the campsites lack hookups, it is best suited for RVers with solar setups or those prepared for a boondocking experience. It is a fantastic choice for travelers seeking a quiet, off-the-beaten-path stopover where they can avoid the noise of highway traffic. If you prefer a rustic environment where the focus is on wildlife viewing and outdoor recreation rather than resort-style amenities, Elkhead Reservoir is a perfect match.

This was a very clean state park with a beautiful reservoir! There is no water available at all at this park! Or dump station!

Nice gravel roads all around to get to the different areas of the Reservoir. Went in July.. So there was some light rain and somewhat gusty winds that messed with one of our tents. We'll kept grounds and park rangers visiting the site areas.

Nice lake but fishing not good. Nice campground but no water or dump. Had to go to Craig and dump at the fairgrounds. Very hot temp and no shade. Could be a nice campground with a few improvements.

Very nice State Park. Clean bathrooms. Campsites looked nice. The staff at the front gate was very helpful. Nice hiking around the reservoir. It would be fun to camp and paddle and fish there.

No showers, no water, no pump station and no joy...this res looks like it's being improved with the boom by the spill way and other things going on. Don't be fooled this park is the same dry, hot, no trees place it always has been. Great for day use or for some one with no reservations on a three day weekend...otherwise go to one of the better campgrounds you probably will drive past on your way here...
