Overview

Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential Nova Scotian woodland experience for those seeking a retreat into nature. As a well-regarded provincial park system destination, it focuses on preserving the natural beauty of the Yarmouth region while providing comfortable access for modern campers. This seasonal park is known for its tall trees and quiet atmosphere, making it a staple for locals and visitors alike who value a rustic yet managed outdoor environment. It serves as an excellent introduction to the province's diverse geography.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the town of Yarmouth, NS, the park is nestled within the scenic interior of the county. The landscape is dominated by the sprawling waters of Ellenwood Lake, surrounded by a dense canopy of mixed hardwoods and softwoods. Its proximity to the Yarmouth ferry terminal makes it an exceptionally convenient first or last stop for travelers journeying between Nova Scotia and the United States via the international ferry route, providing a quick transition from sea to forest.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 80 campsites, including a selection of serviced RV sites equipped with electrical and water hookups to accommodate modern rigs. To support the RV lifestyle, the park provides a centrally located RV dump station and fresh water fill-up points. Guests have access to modern comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, ensuring a level of convenience amidst the wilderness. Recreational features include a boat launch for non-motorized craft, a dedicated swimming area, and several kilometers of well-maintained interpretive trails.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the historic Cape Forchu Lighthouse stands as a must-visit landmark with its rugged coastal views and unique applecore architecture. Travelers can explore the Yarmouth County Museum to learn about the region's deep maritime history or enjoy fresh Atlantic seafood in the local harbor. Within the park, the popular trails offer easy walking paths through the woods, while the lake itself is a prime spot for canoeing and paddleboarding during the warm summer months.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded setting over the high-activity environment of a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for family campers who want to introduce their children to forest exploration and lake activities in a safe, controlled setting. Because it offers a mix of site sizes, it accommodates everything from camper vans to mid-sized motorhomes, provided drivers are comfortable navigating well-maintained gravel park roads and enjoying a slower pace of life.

We have never been to this campground before but people we know gave it a high rating . They were all right. It is beautiful . Nice lots, peaceful and close to amenities. The staff when we were there were very helpful. We truly want to thank Karen, a lovely staff member who was extremely kind to us. There is a term we use for people like her… there are angels who walk among us. Keep smiling Karen…you are appreciated.

Very nice provincial campground. Washrooms and vaults are clean and well stocked. Lots are wooded . It is a dry summer, so quite dusty, but nothing a little rain can't fix!

Lovely place to spend time in nature! The campsites are very well maintained and are nicely treed in for privacy. The lake views are stunning! Bathrooms are immaculate, and the showers are extremely clean.

I love visiting this park in the fall. Even though the park is officially closed for the season, it's still a great place for a walk. I enjoy strolling from the area going down by the lake and through the wooded area. The beauty of the park in autumn is so stunning that no photo can truly capture it. The vibrant colours of the various trees are very beautiful. A few people are walking in the park, along with the park crews who continue to maintain it. Ellenwood is the perfect spot for family portraits during the fall season with a vibrant background or for landscape photography. I always have a great time during my walks here. Thanks to the staff for keeping this park clean.
