Erving State Forest

Overview

Erving State Forest offers a peaceful retreat into the woodlands of North Central Massachusetts. Known for its lush canopy and the sparkling waters of Laurel Lake, this park provides a classic, rustic camping experience. It focuses on reconnecting with nature rather than providing high-tech luxuries. The park is a popular spot for those looking to trade city noise for the sound of wind through the pines. Visitors often appreciate the scenic hardwood forests and the quiet atmosphere that defines this state-managed gem.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the town of Erving, the forest is easily accessible via Route 2, a historic corridor known as the Mohawk Trail. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills and deep valleys carved by the Millers River. The park surrounds Laurel Lake, which serves as the central hub for seasonal recreation. Because of its location in a less-developed part of the state, the surroundings remain quiet and pristine, offering a true sense of seclusion without being too far from local conveniences in nearby towns.

Amenities & Park Features

Camping here is geared toward those who enjoy a back-to-basics lifestyle. The sites are wooded and private, though they lack electricity or water hookups. There are accessible restrooms and showers available for campers, ensuring basic comforts are met. The park features a popular day-use area with a sandy beach and a paved boat ramp for non-motorized or low-horsepower craft. For those traveling with gear, the well-maintained picnic sites and designated fire rings make for traditional evenings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the extensive trail system, which includes eight miles of paths perfect for hiking and mountain biking. Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities for trout and bass in both the lake and the nearby Millers River. During the summer months, the swimming beach is a major highlight. If you want to explore further, a short drive leads to the historic Mohawk Trail, offering panoramic views and charming New England villages that are especially stunning during the peak fall foliage season.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer primitive RV camping and smaller rigs that can navigate winding forest roads. It is a perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts, including hikers, paddlers, and birdwatchers seeking a quiet basecamp. Families who enjoy screen-free time and traditional campfire cooking will feel right at home. If you value natural beauty and solitude over resort-style amenities like Wi-Fi or laundry facilities, Erving State Forest is a top-tier destination for your Massachusetts itinerary.

We stayed 5 nights at Erving State Forest and loved every minute! The campsites, restrooms, and entire area were very clean, and the nature is stunning. We hiked, went canoeing, and enjoyed the peaceful lake beach. The lifeguards were attentive and helped keep the area quiet and relaxing. We’ll definitely be back!

It's excellent, you must bring your trash bag, a protected area, peace without noise from speakers, just people enjoying the beaches.

I have been to ths nice state park many times. However the last time I went there, at a time when they were supposedly open, I could not find anyone. No employees? My plan was to camp for one night and fish in the Millers River. I later found out that the state of Massachusetts would not allow me to camp anyways because I did not book a reservation in advance. This pretty much ruined my trip and totly pissed me off! Very disappointed!

Nice area. Beach is pretty. Free day pass. State park and campground seem well managed. Lake is stocked with trout spring and fall. A bit too developed for our tastes with lots of vacation homes along the north side. Biggest downside is that they allow motorboats. Not the most peaceful lake, but still pretty nice.
