Everglades/Long Pine Key

Overview

Long Pine Key Campground offers a primitive and immersive experience within the heart of Everglades National Park. Located near the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center in Homestead, Florida, this seasonal campground provides a quiet escape into one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. Visitors often find that this park serves as a serene home base for exploring the vast wilderness and diverse wildlife of the southern Everglades without the hustle of nearby urban centers.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled within a rare pine rockland forest, the campground is surrounded by towering slash pines and saw palmettos. Unlike the coastal mangroves found further south toward Flamingo, this area feels like a secluded woodland. The location is ideal for those who want to stay close to the main park entrance while still feeling miles away from civilization. The nearby Long Pine Key Lake provides a stunning backdrop for morning walks and quiet reflection amidst the Florida landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional dry camping destination, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the individual sites. However, the park provides essential facilities including flush toilets, cold-water showers, and a central dump station with potable water available for filling tanks. Each site features a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings. The campground is designed to accommodate both tents and RVs, offering paved pads that simplify the leveling process for larger rigs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the miles of hiking and biking trails, such as the Long Pine Key Nature Trail, which winds through the forest habitat. Just a short drive away, the famous Anhinga Trail offers unparalleled opportunities for spotting alligators and tropical birds in their natural environment. For history buffs, the HM-69 Nike Missile Site provides a fascinating look into Cold War history. Fishing and wildlife photography at the lake are also popular activities for those staying on-site.

Who This Park Is Best For

Long Pine Key is the perfect choice for nature-focused travelers who value peace and solitude over modern resort amenities. It is ideal for RVers who are self-contained and comfortable with boondocking in exchange for breathtaking sunsets and dark night skies. Families and photographers will find endless inspiration here, making it a premier spot for those seeking an authentic Everglades experience away from the more crowded tourist hubs of Southern Florida.

The campground is wonderful. Quiet and well spaced campsites are enjoyable. Primitive camping, no electric, or water. There is a dump station for rvs at the exit to the park. There are plenty of hiking trails, a boat ramp, Everglades boat tours for both the bay side and inland side. Well worth the time and money.

I have stayed at both campgrounds in the Everglades and this was by far the best. The sites are not big but they seem very private because of all the natural barriers. The staff was very friendly and helpful. In my opinion, this campground is closer to some of the best hikes. While the mosquitoes are still present they are not as bad as they are in the other campground. Would stay here again.

Very nice campground. Each site seems separated well. I was in the tent area so real quiet. The toilets weren't working in the tent area si that was a bummer. Nice showers.

It's our 2nd stay here but won't be our last. Love having hot showers and the stillness of no generators after 8pm. The stars put on a great show. One of our favorite stops each time. Staff is always kind and helpful.

Stayed two nights in out travel trailer. Everyone respected the quiet hours for the most part. Bugs were manageable in Feb. staff was great and very helpful. Highly recommend the Everglades water walk. You will see things you just don’t see on dry lands. Verizon cell service was good.
