F.W. Kent Park (Johnson County Park)
Overview
F.W. Kent Park serves as a premier natural destination in Johnson County, spanning over 1,028 acres of diverse landscape. This park is more than just a place to park an RV; it is a meticulously managed conservation area featuring restored prairies, wetlands, and lush woodlands. Managed by the Johnson County Conservation Board, the park offers a peaceful escape for those traveling through eastern Iowa, providing a mix of recreational opportunities and quiet reflection away from the standard highway noise. It is a local treasure that balances environmental education with outdoor fun.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just west of Tiffin and Coralville in Oxford, Iowa, the park is conveniently located near Interstate 80. Despite its proximity to major transit routes, the campground feels secluded and immersed in nature. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling Iowa hills and expansive agricultural land, creating a scenic backdrop for evening walks or morning coffee at your campsite. It provides a perfect balance between rural tranquility and easy access to the urban conveniences found in the nearby Iowa City metropolitan area.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features 86 campsites, with many offering 50-amp electrical hookups to accommodate modern RVs of various sizes. Travelers will find essential facilities such as a modern shower house, a dump station, and accessible restrooms that are well-maintained throughout the season. Beyond the campsites, the park boasts a 27-acre lake popular for fishing and a designated swimming beach. For those looking to explore on foot, an extensive trail system winds through various ecosystems, and the Conservation Education Center provides deep insights into the local flora and fauna.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are perfectly positioned to explore regional highlights like the historic Amana Colonies, located just a short drive to the west, where German heritage and unique dining await. For sports fans or those seeking culture, the University of Iowa and the vibrant downtown area of Iowa City are less than twenty minutes away. Additionally, the nearby Coralville Lake offers further water-based recreation, though many guests find plenty to do within Kent Park’s own borders, from birdwatching to paddling around the lake in a rental boat.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a commercial RV resort. It is a fantastic choice for those who enjoy hiking, fishing, and learning about local ecology in a serene setting. Because of its location near the university, it also serves as a great base for RVers visiting students or attending football games while still wanting a wooded, peaceful place to retreat at the end of the day.

Bass on a bobber? Camping with all sites having electricity? We fished, we camped and will keep doing it here. Safe for kids and extremely clean. 10 for 10 in my book.

Great nature area with small lake/pond, walking trails, and beach. Very tranquil and scenic. Good family spot.

The park is nice but they have no flowing water that goes through their lake which is shitty. Their firepits are in the dumbest locations at campsites, they are too far away and the fire pit is near the dried foliage!!! Forest fire anyone???. They need to move the firepits closer to the camper spots. I'm 25 to 30 feet from firepit. Lake woud be better if they had good water flow through the lake. Other than that it's a nice peaceful place. They could put another network extender at the bottim of the campground or you will have no nothing(wifi or cell signal).

Very family oriented and is a beautiful place to spend the day and a well groomed hiking trail all the way around the lake or camp for however long you wish in a wonderful campground

A wonderful park. Small lake to put your kayak in. A trail around the lake that you can run or walk. Lots of hiking trails to explore. Many interesting repurposed bridges with plaques to explain about them.
