Fairport SRA

Overview

Fairport State Recreation Area offers a classic Iowa riverfront experience on the banks of the Mississippi River. Unlike large commercial resorts, this state-managed site focuses on natural beauty and direct water access. It provides a peaceful setting where travelers can watch barges glide past while enjoying the shade of mature trees. The park is a well-regarded stop for those trekking along the Great River Road scenic byway.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately six miles upstream from Muscatine, the park is nestled between the highway and the Mississippi River. The environment is defined by its proximity to the water, providing panoramic views and refreshing breezes. The surrounding landscape features lush greenery and typical Eastern Iowa river bluffs, making it a scenic corridor for those driving through the Quad Cities region of the Midwest.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides electric hookups at most sites, accommodating both 30 and 50-amp needs for modern rigs. While individual water hookups are not available at each pad, there are conveniently located hydrants and a reliable on-site dump station for waste management. Boaters will appreciate the direct river access via the paved ramp, and families often make use of the modern playground and shaded picnic areas.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors are perfectly positioned to explore the Pearl Button Capital of the World in nearby Muscatine. A visit to Wildcat Den State Park is a must for its unique rock formations and historic grist mill. Fishing is a primary draw here, with anglers frequently casting for catfish and walleye right from the shoreline or from a boat launched directly within the park facilities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers looking for easy Mississippi River access. It also serves as a perfect landing spot for RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over the hustle of a full-service commercial resort. If you value sunset views over the water and a simple, clean camping experience, Fairport SRA will likely fit your travel style perfectly.

I love this little campground with boat ramps right on the riverside of Fairport Slough. There's a nice little beach area on the channel-side of the island that forms the slough. The ramps are decently smooth (paved and grooved, not broken up or all gravel) and not terribly busy in the summer. The docks are missing a couple of cleats, but that's not the end of the world. There's a sign at the ramp I use that says the trailer length limit is 20 feet. I don't know if the other ramp is the same, because I tend to use the upriver one all the time, not the downriver ramp. It's a beautiful spot to enjoy the river in Pool 16 of the Mississippi River!

We had planned to stay one night at this campground until we discovered that we’d lost our trailer keys. Kelly, the camp host, went above and beyond to try and help us locate a locksmith. She worked with us for more than 30 minutes searching for locksmiths in the area. The campground was very tidy and the sites featured gravel pads surrounded by grass. The Mississippi River was 50 yards away and made for a beautiful backdrop.

We thought this park was great. And the price was super, too! The spaces were ample size, the hosts were helpful, it was right on the Mississippi River and close to Muscatine and other towns and quiet and relaxing. **NOTE: some may find it a problem that it’s right next to a very busy train track. We didn’t. Trains come by several times each day and night. They do blow the whistle and it’s loud - but we love trains and it didn’t really bother us. Your camper will shake and you will wake up the first few times. Small price to pay to be right on the river and close to everything. We would stay here again if in the area.

Nice small campground along the Mississippi River. Great price at 23 dollars a night. The bathrooms and showers were nice for a state campground. They have a boat ramp if you want to boat while there. The drinking water at the campsites had a slightly cloudy or brownish tint so we didn't drink it and I would be prepared and bring your own drinking water. Nice views of the river and you can also fish. Take note it is along a train track and there was one train at about 3 AM and then later in the morning that are loud and they blow the horns.

Nice little campground with the river right there with boat ramps even. Water and electric hookup. Showers and bathrooms were clean. Only complaint was, there was a lot of train traffic with them going by throughout the night with the horn.
