Fairview-Riverside

Overview

Fairview-Riverside State Park offers a serene retreat set against the scenic backdrop of the Tchefuncte River. This 99-acre park is widely recognized for its historic moss-draped oaks and lush coastal scenery, providing a quintessential Louisiana outdoor experience. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this park emphasizes natural beauty and historical preservation, anchored by the presence of the Otis House Museum. It serves as an ideal sanctuary for travelers seeking a quiet escape that remains within a short drive of local urban conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside the charming town of Madisonville, the park sits directly along the banks of the Tchefuncte River. The landscape is defined by sprawling wetlands and hardwood forests that offer a canopy of shade for campers. Visitors can enjoy the gentle breezes moving off Lake Pontchartrain, which is located just a few miles downstream. The surrounding area maintains a small-town maritime atmosphere, where local boutiques and waterfront seafood restaurants are easily accessible from the park gates.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 81 campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, accommodating various rig sizes with both back-in and pull-through options. Guests have access to well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and on-site laundry facilities for convenience. A centrally located dump station is available for departing RVers. For recreation, the park provides a boat launch for direct river access, multiple picnic pavilions, and a playground. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the boardwalks and trails that wind through the cypress-tupelo swamp.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Boating and fishing are the primary draws, with the river offering excellent opportunities for catching bass and perch. History buffs should prioritize a tour of the Otis House Museum, a late 19th-century residence located on the park grounds. A short drive away, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum offers deep insight into the region's seafaring heritage. For a major day trip, the nearby Causeway bridge provides a direct route to the world-renowned culture and dining of New Orleans.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is a premier choice for nature photographers and birdwatchers looking to capture Louisiana's unique ecosystems. Beautiful State Park on the Tchefuncta River in Louisiana. Walking trails, fishing boat launch area open for day passes or RV sites. Be advised there are only 6 sites available with sewer hook ups although there is a dump station on your way out.

We absolutely love this park. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The river front is so beautiful. We had the luxury to be there in the snow and were blown away

Best park in all of Lousiana. Peaceful, majestic, clean, historical, with gorgeous views and great RV spots. It has a boat ramp that feeds in to the Tchefuncte River as well. The Pavillion near Otis House is perfect for large events or birthdays with plenty of parking, tables, grills, clean bathrooms and surrounded by massive movie-esque oak trees. The staff at the park are obviously very passionate about their jobs. Morgan is the new manager and has the park looking better than ever with tons of plans for the future. The ladies at the front office & the camp host Chris couldn't be more friendly or helpful and seem to know everyone who visits by name. The maintenance guy must never stop working because the park is in immaculate condition every time we visit. Overall this park is one of the best we've stayed at and continues to get better every time we return!

A very nice quiet campground. Nice walking pier, I would say fishing pier but since its not a "no wake zone" everyone flying by sending swells up over the pier and causing a horrible fishing spot. The spot by Otis house is a better option for fishing since it is right at the beginning of a dead slow zone. Cute little board walk through a "swamp" just edge of river that's overgrown. The pond by Otis house is completely overgrown and can't even see the water any more. The absolute worst part is the mosquitoes. They are so relentless even with deep woods spray and a roaring fire they are tearing us up with no relief other than to stay inside. The mosquito truck wouldn't spray by us only away from camps pushing the mosquitoes deeper in the camp spots. And making it just unbearable. This would be a much better winter camp spot. Or bring some type of barrier against the flying demons.

A Quiet Gem on the Tchefuncte River Howdy, GenX Glamping Guy here with a review of the Fairview-Riverside State Park. I kicked off 2025 with a peaceful weekend at Fairview-Riverside State Park and couldn’t have asked for a better quick getaway. My site near the boat launch, tucked along the banks of the Tchefuncte River, was quiet and serene — perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. The sunsets were breathtaking, and the clear January skies offered a magical display of stars at night. Live Oaks draped in moss gave the whole area an almost mystical vibe. One of the highlights was a walk along the park’s boardwalk, floating above a bed of lily pads. I even took time to film a video about instant coffee — because, why not? [Video] Instant Coffee: See on YouTube @GenXGlampingGuy Exploring deeper into the park, I discovered a hidden gem: a mini outdoor theatre set under a massive Oak tree. I couldn’t resist doing a little impromptu Shakespeare performance with no one around. [Video] Me Performing Shakespeare: See on YouTube @GenXGlampingGuy Later, I stumbled upon a peaceful, swampy inlet dotted with cypress stumps — a perfect hidden corner to sit quietly and take in the surroundings. I captured a timelapse of the sunset over the river, and it did not disappoint. Whether you're into quiet nature walks, riverside views, or just need a spot to reflect and reset, this place is a gem. Highly recommend it, especially if you appreciate the slower, quieter moments. Tim @GenXGlampingGuy on YouTube
