Falls Lake/Rollingview

Overview

Falls Lake State Recreation Area offers a sprawling natural retreat, with the Rollingview area serving as a primary hub for RV enthusiasts. Located just outside the bustling Research Triangle, this park provides a scenic escape centered around a massive 12,000-acre reservoir. Visitors find a lush forest canopy that offers privacy and shade for most campsites. It is a well-maintained state facility that prioritizes the preservation of the local ecosystem while providing accessible outdoor recreation for travelers passing through the Carolinas.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in Durham, NC, Rollingview is perfectly positioned within the North Carolina Piedmont region. The park is characterized by its rolling hills and dense woodlands that frame the expansive shoreline. While the setting feels remote and peaceful, the park remains conveniently close to major highways, making it an easy stop for those exploring the East Coast. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the lake, providing a serene backdrop that feels miles away from the nearby urban centers.

Amenities & Park Features

The Rollingview campground is equipped with electric and water hookups at many sites, catering to the needs of modern RVers. Travelers have access to clean bathhouses with hot showers and a centrally located dump station for convenience. Beyond the campsites, the park features multiple boat ramps and a designated swimming beach that is a favorite during the warmer months. Large picnic shelters and well-marked hiking trails, such as the Piney Mountain Trail, allow visitors to explore the shoreline on foot or enjoy a meal outdoors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

For those looking to explore beyond the park boundaries, the vibrant city of Durham offers world-class dining and the historic American Tobacco Campus. Sports fans can catch a baseball game at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, while nature lovers might head to the nearby Eno River State Park for additional hiking opportunities. The short drive to Raleigh provides access to excellent state museums and the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, making this an ideal basecamp for exploring the Research Triangle area.

Who This Park Is Best For

Rollingview is an ideal choice for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a rustic, nature-focused experience over a commercial resort atmosphere. It is particularly well-suited for families who enjoy water sports, fishing, and kayaking. Because of its proximity to major universities and medical centers, it also serves as a peaceful temporary home for visiting families or road trippers who want to balance city sightseeing with quiet, wooded evenings by a campfire.

Great camping grounds. Large lots, playground and field, access to fishing docks. Really enjoyed our time with 4 year old daughter for overnight camp.

We stayed at Rolling View site B37. This site has electric (50amp, 30amp and 2 110 plugs) and water (water was very brown colored). While this is technically a RV site, we tent camped and had enough room for one 3 person and one 6 person tent. Picnic table was large - 96” and could be moved to wherever you wanted on the tent pad. The fire ring / camp grill was nice - elevated on concrete with fire bricks but the tent bad needed lots of work. It was mostly covered in dirt with just a little gravel in one corner which made everything get covered in dust. The bath houses were decent and not very crowded (most folks at this campground were in RVs). Even though this site didn’t back up to the lake, it was very private with a large dry creek b/w our site and the tent only sites on C loop. We’d stay here again for sure.

The group campsites and beach areas are awesome. Pretty clean, the water depth is good for younger kids, there's usually some shade near the tree line, amenities are clean and functional. No significant complaints come to mind.

Shady sites, many with a water view. Good hiking nearby. Mountains to Sea trail connects to the park and there are other trails a short drive away. There's also a decent lake beach and a put-in for those with boats. Bathrooms are a little dated but are clean.
