Finland/Eckbeck
Overview
Eckbeck Campground offers a quiet, primitive escape within the lush Finland State Forest. Located along the scenic banks of the Baptism River, this campground is a favorite for those seeking a true North Shore experience without the bustle of the larger, more developed state parks nearby. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis, providing a flexible and affordable option for travelers exploring the rugged beauty of Northern Minnesota. The vibe here is decidedly rustic and serene, focused on the natural sounds of the flowing water and the wind through the tall pines.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated just a few miles inland from Lake Superior near the small town of Finland, MN. Tucked away from the main tourist highway, the surroundings are dominated by dense stands of birch, maple, and pine. The Baptism River flows directly through the property, offering peaceful views and a cooling breeze. The location serves as a perfect basecamp for exploring the deeper wilderness of the Sawtooth Mountains and the higher elevations of the North Shore region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state forest facility, amenities are simple but very well-maintained for the rugged traveler. Visitors will find clean vault toilets and a reliable hand-pump for drinking water during the warmer months. Each individual site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table for outdoor meals. While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, the sites are generally spacious and offer significantly more privacy than many commercial parks. It is important to remember that there is no dump station on-site, so RVers should plan ahead.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves perfectly positioned for adventure. A short drive leads to Tettegouche State Park, home to the High Falls and miles of rocky Lake Superior shoreline. Hikers can easily access segments of the Superior Hiking Trail, which winds through the rugged terrain nearby. For those who enjoy fishing, the Baptism River provides excellent opportunities for trout. The nearby town of Finland offers a taste of local culture and essential supplies for those staying long-term in the forest.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize solitude and nature over modern luxuries. If you enjoy dry camping and want to escape the hum of air conditioners and televisions, you will find peace here. It is particularly well-suited for nature photographers and hikers who want to be close to the trails. While larger rigs can occasionally find a spot, it is best for smaller trailers and camper vans looking for an authentic, quiet woodland retreat under the stars.

Nice campground, beautiful area. I was there for 5 days the mosquitoes weren't bad and didn't get any ticks on me or my cat who ran around in the grass. I had spotty cell service.(mint)

Campground was nice with restroom facilities there. Maintained well. For being far out as it was the traffic seemed to be a lot but it was the weekend so that may have played a factor. Otherwise, great experience and easy to get a spot if you come early enough. First come first served.

Camped here with our truck camper. There are many sites that will fit a larger camper. I would feel comfortable pulling our 29' 5th wheel through here to get a site. I may have to park the truck in the overflow lot. Of course as long as one is available. This is a first come first serve campground. We are here on a Thursday 9-30-21 and there are plenty of sites open.i imagine they will start to fill Friday afternoon. No electricity, there is a hand pump for water. And two separate vault toilet areas. It appears all of the outside camp sites have access to the Baptisim River, with some being right on the river. Most of the sites will accommodate multiple tents or even a camper and a tent.

Nice quiet campground with fairly private spaces. Great for tenting along the north shore

Great campground. Need to have rules about RVs running noisy gas generators all day and night. Please stay in a hotel if you can't live without TV sports/movies so others can appreciate the incredible nature at Eckbeck.
