Finland
Overview
Located in the heart of the Superior National Forest, the Finland area offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a quieter alternative to the bustling Lake Superior coastline. This region is defined by its deep woods, rushing rivers, and authentic Northwoods atmosphere. Choosing to stay here means trading luxury resort amenities for a more intimate connection with nature. Whether you are parking a small rig or a camper van, the area provides a peaceful home base for exploring the rugged beauty of northeastern Minnesota.
Location & Surroundings
Finland, MN, is situated just six miles inland from the North Shore of Lake Superior, tucked along the banks of the Baptism River. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills, dense stands of pine and birch, and dramatic rock outcroppings. Unlike the exposed lakefront, the surroundings here offer protection from the stiff winds of the Great Lake, creating a sheltered environment that feels like a hidden wilderness retreat. It is conveniently located near Highway 1, providing easy access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
The facilities in Finland lean toward a traditional, rustic experience. Travelers can typically expect primitive campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables. While you won't find expansive water parks or clubhouses, the essentials are well-maintained, including vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water. Some designated areas near the community center provide basic electric hookups, but the primary draw is the lack of modern distractions. The park features allow the sounds of the Baptism River and local wildlife to take center stage during your stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts are perfectly positioned to explore some of Minnesota’s most iconic landscapes. Just a short drive away is Tettegouche State Park, home to the spectacular High Falls and the dizzying cliffs of Palisade Head. Hikers can access segments of the Superior Hiking Trail, which winds through the ridges above the town. For those interested in local culture, the Finland Heritage Site offers a glimpse into the area's Finnish-American history. Fishing and canoeing on the local rivers are also popular seasonal activities for those staying in the area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who value solitude and proximity to nature over resort-style luxuries. If you prefer the crackle of a real campfire to a paved parking pad, you will feel right at home. It is a fantastic choice for adventurous couples or solo travelers looking to explore the North Shore without the crowds. Because of the rustic nature of the sites, it is particularly well-suited for smaller rigs, truck campers, and vans that can navigate wooded access roads with ease.

4.5 stars. They have a little of everything, mostly groceries and hardware, but also some camping, fishing and hunting gear.

The Finland Co-op is a really nice place. They have a bit of everything a person would need, with groceries, hardware, camping supplies, and fishing tackle. I will definitely stop by again if I am in the area.
