Overview
Finley's Landing is a serene county park tucked away along the majestic Mississippi River. Unlike large-scale commercial resorts, this park offers a rustic and intimate camping experience that prioritizes natural beauty and river access. Managed by Dubuque County, the park serves as a gateway to the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, providing a tranquil basecamp for those who love the great outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of Dubuque in Sherrill, Iowa, the park is defined by its scenic limestone bluffs and dense hardwood forests. The drive into the park winds through the rolling hills of the Driftless Area, offering a landscape that feels worlds away from the flat prairies often associated with the Midwest. The park’s position directly on the river provides sweeping views and a constant connection to the water.
Amenities & Park Features
RV travelers will find well-maintained sites equipped with electric hookups and fire rings. While the park maintains a natural feel, it provides essential comforts to ensure a pleasant stay:
- Modern restrooms and shower facilities
- A public boat ramp with direct river access
- A designated swimming beach on the riverbank
- A playground for families with children
These features combine the convenience of modern facilities with the rugged charm of a riverside campsite.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the vibrant city of Dubuque, located about 15 miles away. Must-see attractions include the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium and the historic Fenelon Place Elevator. For those who enjoy hiking, the surrounding hills offer several trails with spectacular overlooks. Fishing is a primary pastime here, with the river teeming with walleye, bass, and catfish for those who cast a line.
Who This Park Is Best For

Beautiful beach sand and a nice change of scenery. It's fun to find unexpected gems like this one.

This beach to me is my happy place if I am missing the ocean. I know its a river but it is nice. Definitely bring a life jacket as the current can be dangerous for even the most advanced swimmers. and definitely bring sandals because the sand can cause burns on hot days. Our family loves to get in the water at the north end of the beach and float in our lifejackets down to the south end of the beach. Its alot of fun. Also the campground is really nice too.

It's a nice park! But BEWARE, brought our schnauzer here on the beach a few weeks back and he got so many painful burs that took a long time to get out 😣
