Fisheating Creek Outpost

Overview

Fisheating Creek Outpost serves as a gateway to one of Florida's last remaining wild rivers. Located in Palmdale, this destination offers a rare glimpse into a primordial landscape dominated by ancient bald cypress trees and dark, tannin-rich waters. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect from modern stressors and immerse themselves in a pristine wilderness setting while still having access to essential RV comforts and a friendly community atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the western edge of Lake Okeechobee, the park sits within the sprawling Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area. The surrounding geography is characterized by seasonal floodplains and lush hardwood hammocks. The creek itself flows from Highlands County directly into the lake, providing a vital corridor for native wildlife. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by the rhythmic sounds of the woods, far removed from the bustling traffic of Florida's major coastal cities.

Amenities & Park Features

The outpost provides practical facilities for RV travelers, including sites equipped with water and electricity hookups that accommodate various rig sizes. To ensure a comfortable stay, the park offers a dump station and clean bathhouses. A highlight of the facility is the well-stocked camp store, which provides firewood, ice, and basic gear. The park also operates a full-service livery, allowing guests to rent canoes or kayaks to navigate the iconic waterway with ease.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heartbeat of this region. You can spend your days paddling past sunbathing alligators or hiking the scenic nature trails that wind through the cypress swamp. Fishing is a popular pastime, with the creek hosting a healthy population of bass. For a unique local experience, visit the nearby Gatorama to learn about reptile conservation, or take a short drive to explore the massive dike and fishing piers at Lake Okeechobee.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize raw natural beauty over resort-style amenities. If you enjoy waking up to the calls of sandhill cranes and prefer a rustic, tranquil environment, this outpost is an excellent choice. It is a fantastic destination for families wanting to experience the authentic Florida backcountry and for travelers seeking a quiet retreat into the wild.

Very nice and semi-secluded campground just off US 27. (🐕‍🦺Heads up, be ready to provide Vax records for your dog.🐕)

I was told about this park as one of the best parks. We got there and the people at the post are very friendly, and they told us some of the park was flooded because of the rain. We wanted to kayak, so we rented one for two hours, that was AWSOME!! Then we went to see the lake to take a swim, but...the lake was kind of dirty. No entrance point, and the bathrooms were dirty, toilet paper everywhere. Not a nice place to go with kids or family.

A great campground that is close to home. Perfect for a weekend getaway. Spacious sites with large concrete pads. Shade in the A and B loops. Nice showers. Good star gazing at night. Friendly staff.

Great camping options at Fisheating Creek for couples, families and small groups, and large groups with tent camping or campers needing full hookups. Canoes, kayaks and bikes for rent daily until 5pm. The creek front tent sites are lower lying and can get damp. This time we camped in the oak grove campground area and were able to stay dry despite a night of heavy rain. Definitely make time to walk the boardwalk and nature loop, we saw birds, a family of little boars and huge piles of fresh bear scat!
