Fisherman's Island

Overview

Fisherman's Island State Park is a hidden gem that actually isn't an island at all, as fluctuating water levels long ago connected it to the Michigan mainland. Located just a few miles south of downtown Charlevoix, this park offers a **uniquely rustic camping experience** that emphasizes the raw, natural beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline. Spanning over 2,600 acres, the park is a sanctuary for those who want to swap modern distractions for the rhythmic sound of crashing waves and wind-swept dunes.

Location & Surroundings

The park is defined by its incredible **six miles of lake frontage**, where rolling sand dunes meet the clear, turquoise waters of the Great Lakes. The terrain is a captivating mix of **cedar swamps and lush hardwood forests**, providing a dense canopy that offers privacy and shade for campers. Because the park is nestled on a thin strip of land between the shoreline and the highway, you are never far from the water, allowing the cool lake breeze to reach almost every corner of the campground.

Amenities & Park Features

Travelers should arrive prepared for a primitive stay, as the park offers **no electric, water, or sewer hookups** at any of the campsites. Facilities are limited to **vault toilets and hand-pumped water**, reinforcing the park's commitment to a back-to-basics lifestyle. Key features of the campground include:

  • **Rustic lakefront campsites** with direct beach access.
  • Access to several miles of **hiking and nature trails** through diverse ecosystems.
  • Quiet, wooded sites that provide a high degree of privacy.

Among the 80 available sites, the **coveted beachside spots** are the primary draw, allowing RVers to park their rigs just steps away from the sandy shore and enjoy unobstructed views of the sunset over the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from **hunting for Petoskey stones** along the rocky shoreline to exploring miles of interior hiking and biking trails. The proximity to the **charming town of Charlevoix** allows for easy trips to see the famous Earl Young Mushroom Houses or to enjoy a meal at a local bistro. For a longer adventure, the nearby ferry terminal offers trips to Beaver Island, providing even more opportunities for deep-woods exploration and lake photography. The area is also famous for its local orchards and seasonal farm markets.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is tailor-made for the **self-contained RVer** who thrives in a boondocking environment and values tranquility over convenience. Due to the narrow park roads and the size of the rustic pads, it is most comfortable for **smaller trailers and camper vans** rather than large Class A motorhomes. It is the perfect fit for travelers seeking solitude, stargazing opportunities, and a deep connection with Michigan's coastal wilderness, away from the hum of more developed and crowded RV resorts.

This is our favorite beach to go to! The kids easily find Petoskey stones, Charlevoix stones, and other fossils. The beach is mostly sandy with some stoney areas, and places to sit in the shade of trees. There are 3 parking areas for beach access, and the one at the very end puts you within walking distance to the island. That's the coolest thing to do, too! You can walk right out to the island and then walk around it! The camping is also pretty great, and there are nice/easy trails to hike. No electricity, vault toilets, water available. Good for tents and small trailers, like pop-ups. There is a cement factory nearby that produces a constant humming noise, and small planes frequently fly overhead between Charlevoix and Beaver Island.

The beach is beautiful! Perfect sunsets every night! The campsites were clean and everyone was so friendly and helpful! Dog friendly even on the beach!

Great beach. Very secluded. You can definitely find a spot to call your own. Lots of rocks to look through just into the water. There is nice one mile hike along the shore if you want to walk.

We camped at the south campground. The beaches are wonderful but rocky. Wear water shoes. And if you’re camping try to get one of the beach side sites.

My wife and I spent a peaceful morning rock hounding at Fisherman’s Island State Park in Charlevoix, Michigan, and it was a truly rewarding experience. The quiet shoreline, especially in the early hours, offered a perfect setting to search for Charlevoix and Petoskey stones. We found a few beautiful specimens and really enjoyed the simple joy of exploring together. This spot is a hidden gem for anyone who appreciates Michigan’s natural beauty and the thrill of uncovering unique rocks along the water’s edge.
