Flathead Lake/Big Arm

Overview

Flathead Lake State Park - Big Arm offers a quintessential Montana experience along the expansive shores of the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. Situated under a canopy of stately ponderosa pines, this park serves as a primary gateway for those looking to explore the water or the nearby islands. The atmosphere here is centered on the natural beauty of Big Arm Bay, providing a serene setting for travelers who appreciate scenic lakefront views and a slower pace of life within a protected natural landscape.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned on the southwestern shore of Flathead Lake in the small community of Big Arm, Montana. It is framed by the dramatic Mission Mountains to the east, which create a stunning backdrop for sunrise photographers and evening stargazers. The surrounding area is relatively quiet, characterized by rolling hills and dense forests. Because of its location on a large, protected bay, the waters are often calmer here than in the main body of the lake, making it a popular spot for water-based recreation and wildlife spotting along the shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state-managed facility, the amenities focus on integrating with the natural environment rather than providing commercial luxury. The park features designated RV sites that can accommodate various rig sizes, including several sites equipped with electrical hookups. Visitors have access to a concrete boat ramp and a dock, which are essential for those bringing their own watercraft to explore the lake. Each campsite typically includes a fire ring and picnic table. While it maintains a rustic charm, the park provides essential comforts such as potable water and vault toilets for a functional stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The most prominent attraction is Wild Horse Island, a 2,163-acre primitive park located just offshore and accessible only by boat. RVers often use Big Arm as a base camp to launch kayaks or motorboats to visit the island, which is home to wild horses, bighorn sheep, and mule deer. On-site, visitors can enjoy a two-mile hiking trail that winds through the forest and offers elevated views of the bay. Fishing is also a major draw, with the lake known for its trophy-sized lake trout and seasonal yellow perch.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a natural state park setting over a paved commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for boaters and kayakers who want immediate access to the water. Because of the limited hookups and rustic infrastructure, it appeals most to travelers who enjoy a traditional camping experience or have a self-contained setup. Families looking for a quiet retreat and photographers seeking mountain vistas will find this park an excellent choice for a summer getaway.

Most of the sites are parallel with the lake shore so pretty easy to set up our trailer. Beautiful view. I did notice some bigger rigs with slide outs weren't able to extend them fully because your site is basically a wide spot on the road .

The shuttle service to wild horse island was great. Would definitely do it again if I ever come back to flathead

I’ve been to Flathead many times and have never been to this side. We usually go to Wayfarer’s, but we missed the booking window this year. So we came to Big Arm and I was so pleasantly impressed with the amenities and the campsites. Really lovely place!

Gorgeous lake with many great fishing spots. Can't wait to come back for a couple days and add some shopping and dining out to our agenda in the nearby towns.

The camp ground views and water were AMAZING! The only reason it's not a 5 star is the camp site condition. We pulled our littlebpop up camper. The site was so uneven, our stabilizer jacks broke. It was pretty scary. I understand it's tough, but we would have appreciated knowing the condition of the terrain. Or the site should not have been listed as appropriate for a camper.
