Flathead Lake/Finley Point

Overview

Located on the southern tip of the largest freshwater lake in the West, Flathead Lake State Park - Finley Point offers a secluded and intimate camping experience. Unlike the larger, more bustling units of the state park system, Finley Point provides a tranquil retreat nestled within a dense forest of ponderosa pine and larch. This park is specifically designed for those who want to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Montana while maintaining easy access to the crystal-clear waters of Flathead Lake.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just 11 miles north of Polson, MT, the drive to the park takes you through the famous Finley Point cherry orchards, which burst into bloom in spring and offer fresh fruit in the summer. The park itself sits on a narrow peninsula, meaning water is never far away. The shoreline is characterized by rugged rock outcroppings and gravel beaches, offering dramatic views of the Mission Mountains rising to the east across the blue expanse of the lake.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 18 designated RV sites designed to provide a sense of privacy amidst the timber. The amenities cater well to self-contained travelers looking for a nature-focused stay:

  • Electrical and water hookups (30-amp) at select sites to support modern RVs.
  • A 16-slip marina and boat launch, making this a premier destination for boaters.
  • Access to a dump station and potable water for convenience.

Each site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings under the vast Montana sky.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with exceptional opportunities for lake trout fishing and kayaking along the sheltered coves. Beyond the park gates, visitors can explore the charming shops and local museums in downtown Polson or take a scenic drive around the entire perimeter of the lake. For hikers, the nearby Mission Mountains Wilderness offers challenging trails and breathtaking alpine scenery, while seasonal roadside stands provide a taste of local Montana agriculture.

Who This Park Is Best For

Finley Point is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize water access and a quiet dockside environment. It is a perfect fit for RVers who prefer the state park style of camping—focusing on scenery and serenity over resort-style amenities like pools or clubhouses. If you enjoy smaller, more private campgrounds and waking up to the sound of water lapping against the shore, this hidden gem in Polson is a must-visit destination.

Park staff was super nice! She told us all about the lake and said we could let the pups play in the lake. The water is unbelievably clear and the we loved our time there.

We were able to book one night in the paintbrush cabin and it was so cute. It doesn’t have a great view of the lake but it’s nice and secluded. We also saw so many deer. The campsites looked cute but not very private at all. Gorgeous sunsets down at the beach!
