Flathead/Lost Johnny Point

Overview

Flathead/Lost Johnny Point offers a quintessentially rustic Montana camping experience within the Flathead National Forest. Perched on the western shores of the Hungry Horse Reservoir, this site provides a serene escape for travelers who prioritize nature over luxury. It is a primitive forest service campground where the focus remains on the stunning glacial waters and the surrounding evergreen canopy. The park serves as an excellent base for those seeking a quiet retreat away from the crowds of more developed tourist corridors.

Location & Surroundings

Located near Martin City, MT, the park sits along the massive Hungry Horse Reservoir, a 34-mile-long body of water surrounded by rugged mountain peaks. The landscape is dominated by dense pine forests and rocky shorelines, offering breathtaking views of the nearby Jewel Basin. Visitors often find themselves immersed in a wilderness setting where the sounds of the water and local wildlife define the atmosphere. The secluded shoreline provides immediate access to high-altitude aquatic recreation in a peaceful, natural environment.

Amenities & Park Features

As a forest service facility, the amenities are simple and geared toward self-contained RVers. The campground features vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water, though there are no electrical or sewer hookups available. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor cooking. One of the standout features is the concrete boat ramp, which allows for easy launching into the reservoir. While the sites can accommodate some larger rigs, the access roads are better suited for mid-sized trailers and campers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The reservoir is a prime destination for trout fishing and boating, with miles of shoreline to explore via kayak or motorboat. Just a short drive away, travelers can visit the Hungry Horse Dam, one of the highest arched dams in the United States, which offers an impressive visitor center. For those willing to drive a bit further, the western entrance to Glacier National Park is roughly 20 miles away. Local trails also wind through the national forest, providing ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want direct access to the water without the bustle of a commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for dry campers who enjoy a primitive, quiet atmosphere and do not mind the lack of modern utilities. Great campground! Very well run, beautiful views, and private but still can accommodate a good group! Plus you can swim in Hungry Horse reservoir which is refreshing and well worth it. There are also lots of huckleberry bushes around if you go during the season.

Nice campground on the Hungry Horse reservoir. Some sites are walk-in and some are reservable through reservation.gov. The camp host was friendly. The views are beautiful and it's very quiet and peaceful. Close to the West Glacier entrance and the East entrance is about 1 1/2-2 hours away.

Beautiful campground! If we lived closer, it would be a regular spot for us. Campsites were large with lots of trees for privacy. The lake and views are spectacular. Close to Glacier for day trips.

5 bucks just to park a car and hang out on the beach for a few minutes every time you visit is a ripoff when there are no picnic tables or garbage cans. The state parks in the Flathead Valley are much better and cost effective.

Plenty of FCFS spots, all spots are spaced well and close to the lake. Host couldn’t be nicer.
