Flathead/Murray Bay
Overview
Flathead/Murray Bay offers a serene, rustic experience on the shores of the Hungry Horse Reservoir. Nestled within the vast Flathead National Forest, this campground serves as a quiet alternative to the more crowded areas near the national park gates. It provides travelers with a genuine back-to-nature atmosphere where the sound of the wind through the pines and the gentle lapping of water replace the hum of highway traffic. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate the rugged beauty of Montana and want to disconnect from the modern world.
Location & Surroundings
Located along the western shore of the Hungry Horse Reservoir, the park is situated about 9 miles south of the town of Hungry Horse. The drive follows the West Side Reservoir Road, offering stunning views of the towering peaks and deep blue water. The surroundings are defined by dense coniferous forests and rocky shorelines, providing a secluded feel while remaining relatively accessible. The elevation and waterfront proximity keep the area cool and refreshing during the peak summer months, making it a true mountain getaway.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest site, the amenities here are basic but functional for self-contained RVs. The park features primitive campsites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no utility hookups, visitors have access to vault toilets and seasonal potable water. One of the most significant draws is the on-site boat launch, which allows campers to easily transition from land to water. The sites are generally well-spaced, offering a level of privacy that is often missing from crowded commercial resorts.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the reservoir itself, which is perfect for boating and fishing for cutthroat and bull trout. Exploring the 34-mile-long reservoir by kayak or motorboat provides endless opportunities for wildlife viewing, including bald eagles and osprey. Just a short drive away, visitors can visit the Hungry Horse Dam, one of the highest concrete dams in the United States. Furthermore, the west entrance of Glacier National Park is less than 20 miles away, making this a viable base for day-trip hiking and sightseeing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is best suited for boondockers and self-contained RVers who do not require electrical or sewer connections. It is a fantastic choice for families who enjoy water-based recreation and those seeking a quiet, primitive camping experience deep in the woods. If your travel style prioritizes natural scenery and outdoor adventure over resort-style luxuries, this campground provides the perfect basecamp for exploring the Jewel Basin and the surrounding mountain ranges in a peaceful environment.

Had a well stocked variety of USFS paper maps, campground, and hiking trail guides.

Very large and deep lake surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and wildlife. It's a very beautiful drive around the lake with several forrest service roads available. You will not be disappointed with the visit. Worth the drive!

One of my most favorite places. The South Fork river is iconic, even when the trout are not biting.

We had the best stay here over the weekend. The Camp host, Danny really made our experience incredible! We loved this place.
