Florida Caverns

Overview

Florida Caverns State Park offers a truly unique subterranean experience in the heart of the Florida Panhandle. Unlike the typical sandy beaches or swampy marshlands often associated with the Sunshine State, this park showcases limestone caves filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. It serves as a peaceful retreat where history and ancient geology meet, providing a quiet, natural environment for RVers looking for an inland adventure. This state park remains a hidden gem for those who want to see a different side of Florida's diverse landscape and enjoy a cooler, shaded environment during their travels.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Marianna, just a short drive from Interstate 10, the park is nestled along the scenic banks of the Chipola River. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills and dense hardwood forests that have shown remarkable resilience and regrowth in recent years. Travelers will find the park easy to access for large rigs, yet it feels worlds away from the highway noise, surrounded by the rural charm of Jackson County. The area is characterized by karst topography, creating a dramatic backdrop for your camping stay that is unlike any other region in the state.

Amenities & Park Features

The Blue Hole campground provides 35 versatile RV sites equipped with electric and water hookups. While the park maintains a rustic, natural charm, it offers essential conveniences for the modern traveler. Key features of the facility include:

  • Modern bathhouses and laundry facilities for guest use.
  • A central dump station for convenient waste management.
  • Dedicated equestrian stables and horse-friendly trails for animal lovers.

Most sites are shaded by a recovering canopy, providing a comfortable atmosphere during the warmer Florida months. The park also features a visitor center and a playground, making it a well-rounded stop for those traveling with families.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the guided cave tours, where visitors can explore cathedral-like rooms and intricate rock formations deep underground. Outside the caverns, the Chipola River is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or fishing for local bass. Nature lovers can enjoy the Blue Hole spring, a popular spot for a refreshing dip in crystal-clear, cool water that remains a constant temperature year-round. Additionally, the park features several miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking and wildlife viewing, where you might spot white-tailed deer or various migratory birds in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and active families who enjoy educational travel and outdoor exploration. Because the sites are tucked into a natural setting, it appeals most to those who prefer a quiet state park atmosphere over the high-activity environment of commercial RV resorts. It is a fantastic choice for geology buffs, photographers, or road trippers crossing North Florida who want to experience a unique side of the state's natural history. If you value tranquility, unique landscapes, and outdoor recreation, this is the perfect stop for your next RV trip.

Very nice park. We enjoyed the caverns, our guide Sam, who was extremely good, funny and knowledgeable about the caverns. It is a little small and challenging but that’s the charm of it. We’ve been to quite a few and this one is at the top of my list. The food truck had terrific food, we would highly recommend it.

I had such a memorable experience visiting the Florida Caverns. It feels like stepping into a completely different world. The guided cavern tour was the highlight. The formations were beautiful and fascinating, and the guide did a great job balancing education, history, and storytelling in a way that kept everyone engaged. You move through narrow passages, see impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and learn about the geology and history of the area along the way. It’s both educational and genuinely fun. The caverns themselves are well maintained and thoughtfully preserved, and you can tell there’s care taken to protect the environment while still making it accessible to visitors. The park overall is peaceful and scenic, with walking trails, shaded areas, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy nature. A few tips: wear comfortable shoes with good grip since some areas can be damp or uneven, and be prepared for stairs and low ceilings in certain sections. The effort is totally worth it though.

We went on a cold day so this was a perfect experience! The caverns are nice and warm on the inside. The tour was awesome. It is definitely something that involves moderate physical activity but is worth it for the beautiful views. Our tour guide Jake was great, 5/5 stars!
