Fontenelle Reservoir Campground (BLM)

Overview

Fontenelle Reservoir Campground (BLM) offers a serene escape into the high desert landscape of southwestern Wyoming. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this site is situated along the shores of the Fontenelle Reservoir, a significant impoundment of the Green River. It provides a rugged, authentic camping experience for those who appreciate wide-open spaces and direct access to water-based recreation. The atmosphere is notably quiet, making it an excellent alternative to more crowded destinations.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 35 miles northeast of Kemmerer, the campground is defined by its high desert terrain and panoramic views of the water. The surrounding area consists of vast sagebrush flats and rolling hills that characterize the Green River Basin. Because of its open layout, visitors can enjoy unobstructed vistas of the Wyoming sky. Travelers should be prepared for the remote nature of the location, as services are limited once you leave the main highway.

Amenities & Park Features

The amenities at Fontenelle Reservoir are functional and primitive, designed for self-sufficient travelers who bring their own supplies. The campground serves as a primary hub for water-based activities. Key features available at the site include:

  • Concrete boat launch ramps for easy reservoir access
  • Individual sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables
  • Standard vault toilets maintained for visitor use

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, so visitors should arrive with full tanks and plenty of power.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw here is the excellent fishing for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout within the reservoir and the tailwaters of the Green River. Boating and windsurfing are also popular due to the consistent breezes in this region. For a change of pace, campers can take a short drive to Fossil Butte National Monument to see world-class fossil specimens. Wildlife viewing is another highlight, with migratory birds frequently spotted near the shoreline.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking and do not require modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or full hookups. It is a perfect match for anglers and boaters who want to stay as close to the water as possible. If you value solitude, dark night skies for stargazing, and a minimalist camping style, Fontenelle Reservoir offers a peaceful retreat away from the more traditional tourist corridors.

It's October. We thought we'd camp there but the bugs were the worst we've ever seen. So we left. But the view was spectacular hence to 4 stars. There was absolutely no one there, probably because the flying bugs.

Very open scenery by the lake. BLM sites with a picnic table and roof cover over it. It’s $7 a night a think. Me and my friends cowboy camped here for a night during December, about 4°F with snow on the ground. There is also a boat ramp right next to the campground and you can ice fish on the lake.

We stayed here on our drive east in Oct and we were the only one here in the entire campground. As it was after the season, we didn’t even have to pay per the sign. Each site has a curved pergola over a picnic table and some has a bbq grill. Our dog had a great time chasing chipmunks and rabbits. As the night fell, we were welcome by the Hunter moon and even caught a glimpse of the comet. Grounds is well kept even in the off season, though there were some cow dungs on the ground.

This is a nice campground. There are no hookups or water connections but water is available in many sites around the campground. The spigots aren't threaded so bring a rubber adaptor (water bandit) to hook up to a hose. There is a dump site available near the entrance and a dumpster at the boat ramp. There are several flush toilet restrooms when it is not freezing and vault toilets for the winter. There is access to the reservoir for boat although the water is low and you have to go a ways to launch. Although there are no official hikes there is good walking around the campground and lots of waterfront to check out. Lots of birds and far enough from the road to be quiet. As usual in WY, it's windy. But that's normal for WY. In general it is in need of a bit of upkeep, but overall it is a really nice campground. $7/night or half price with a senior national parks pass. Well worth it!

For me, Fontenelle Creek Campground was perfect. There were only 2 other campers when I arrived and so far only one more joined us. There's flush toilets, water, picnic tables, fire rings, dump station...$7.00/night ($3.50 for seniors with America the Beautiful card). Huge reservoir filled with geese, birds & chipmunks everywhere and hardly anyone around!!! lots of space to walk my dog. I can drink my coffee outside in my jammies without a care! So far, I love it! To be fair, it is in a bit of disrepair and there's no camp host...more like boondocking with benefits. Works for me!
