Forest Lake State Forest Campground
Overview
Forest Lake State Forest Campground offers a serene, rustic camping experience in the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Managed by the Department of Natural Resources, this small and intimate destination provides a peaceful alternative to the more crowded commercial parks found in the region. It is designed specifically for travelers who value a direct connection with nature and the simplicity of a lakeside setting without the distractions of modern technology or heavy development.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Alger County just southwest of Munising, the park sits on the southern shore of Forest Lake. The surrounding landscape is defined by lush hardwoods and a quiet atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization. While its proximity to Highway M-94 makes the campground accessible for travelers, the dense tree cover provides a significant sense of seclusion and privacy that is characteristic of the Michigan wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state forest site, the amenities are intentionally basic to preserve the natural environment. Guests will find vault toilets and a potable water hand pump rather than modern restroom facilities or electricity. The park features roughly a dozen sites, each equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. A convenient public boat launch is available on-site, providing easy water access for those looking to explore the lake by kayak, canoe, or small fishing boat.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which is only a short drive to the northeast. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy paddling on the Au Train River or visiting the numerous waterfalls scattered throughout the Munising area. The lake itself is known for its calm waters and no-wake speed limit, making it a perfect spot for morning fishing or observing local wildlife in their natural habitat.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for primitive camping enthusiasts and owners of smaller RVs, truck campers, or van conversions who do not require electrical hookups. It caters heavily to anglers and kayakers looking for immediate water access in a quiet, low-traffic setting. If you prefer the sounds of the forest over the hum of generators and enjoy an off-the-grid lifestyle, this campground will perfectly fit your travel style.

Wonderful first come first serve campground with large sites (almost all are waterfront). The fee is $20 a night. Vault toilets were pretty clean when we were there (shockingly no flies or smell). I will warn that there is no cell service so just prepare for that. At this campground there is also a small boat launch, water pump, and at least 1 geocach.

Very nice size lots, clean vault bathrooms. Very quiet at night even with highway close.

A piece of paradise. No cell reception which is awesome. Beautifully secluded lake. Want a break from your busy life, this is the perfect place for you.

Awesome campground! Great view of the lake and nice and quiet with great privacy. Lots of space! But beware; sand people do roam.

WARNING: Google Maps sent us down Baker Grde, a two-track that was absolutely unsuitable for towing our camper!! We nearly got stuck in the sand (thank God for my 4 x 4!!). Between the sand and the narrowness of the two-track, we bent a jack stand, lost our license plate and broke the vent cover to our stove. It was the longest 3.5 miles we've ever driven! PROS: Rustic campground with 16 large, wooded sites. Fifteen sites are on the lake and the 16th is on a pond. Sites are suitable for tents or medium/large campers. The campground was pretty full while we were there and campers were fairly quiet. The lake is large and clean but appears to be over fished. It is perfect for canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards. There is potable water available via handpump, but very high in iron (water has orange appearance). Location is great for site seeing along the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline. Vault toilets were clean. Loons were wonderful to listen to! There is a boat launch and picnic area near the entrance to the campground CONS: Very close to M-58, although traffic sounds weren't terrible. We prefer something more remote. No cell service. We did enjoy being unplugged, however. Lots of dead trees in the water are, well, ugly. Closest store is the Melstrand General Store 20 miles to the west.
