Fort Abraham Lincoln

Overview

Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is the oldest state park in North Dakota, offering a unique blend of frontier military history and ancient Native American culture. Situated where the Heart and Missouri Rivers meet, the park provides a deep connection to the past. RVers can explore the legendary home of General Custer or walk through the reconstructed Mandan village while enjoying a well-maintained campground that serves as a perfect base camp for exploring the Great Plains.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Mandan, ND, the park is defined by its sweeping river views and rolling prairie landscapes. The campground is tucked into the lush river bottom, providing plenty of shade and a sense of seclusion despite being just a short drive from the Bismarck-Mandan metropolitan area. This balance makes it easy to enjoy the tranquility of nature while maintaining convenient access to urban amenities and supplies.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a range of facilities for modern travelers. Guests can enjoy well-maintained spaces that cater to both large rigs and smaller campers. Key features include:

  • Electric and water hookups at most sites
  • Modern comfort stations with heated showers
  • Convenient on-site dump station
  • Picnic shelters and a children's playground

The park ensures a comfortable stay by offering shaded sites and easy access to the riverfront for evening walks along the bank.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors should not miss the On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village, featuring five reconstructed earth lodges. History enthusiasts can take guided tours of the Custer House or hike up to the infantry post blockhouses for a panoramic view of the valley. The park also boasts an extensive trail system for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, while the river offers opportunities for fishing and relaxing by the water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for history buffs who want to immerse themselves in the stories of the Lewis and Clark expedition and the 7th Cavalry. Absolutely a perfect place to stay. The gentleman at the gate was extremely pleasant. The grounds are lovely. Very quiet and relaxing stay. We enjoyed walking along the well manicured walkway along the river with our pups. Although we didn't use the bathhouse, it was very clean. I would definitely come back if on the area again.

Loved the Custer House and the barracks we were able to tour and walk through. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly! Also went up to the infantry post and walked around which was awesome! Highly recommended.

So much history in the area, from the Mandan native Americans, to Lewis and Clark expedition and Gen Custer's fortress the park is named after. Great camping along the Missouri and Heart rivers, one of the best in ND!
