Fort Clinch

Overview

Fort Clinch State Park offers a unique blend of history and nature at the northern tip of Amelia Island. Covering over 1,400 acres, it serves as a coastal sanctuary for RVers seeking a quiet escape. The park is famous for its well-preserved 19th-century fort and miles of untouched shoreline. Unlike many commercial parks, this state park focuses on preserving the maritime forest and providing a serene environment for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a deeper connection with the Florida coast.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Fernandina Beach, FL, the park provides easy access to the St. Marys River and the Atlantic Ocean. The surroundings change dramatically from dense canopies of moss-draped live oaks to sprawling sand dunes. This transition creates a diverse habitat for local wildlife, including gopher tortoises and white-tailed deer. Its northern location offers a slightly cooler maritime climate compared to southern Florida, making it a favorite for year-round coastal exploration within a pristine maritime hammock.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers can choose between two distinct camping areas that cater to different preferences. The River Campground provides more shade under ancient oaks, while the Atlantic Beach Campground sits right behind the dunes with ocean breezes. Most sites include water and electric hookups, with central dump stations available for convenience. While the park lacks a swimming pool, it offers clean bathhouses, a dedicated fishing pier, and miles of multi-use trails for biking and hiking through the wooded landscape.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the historic Fort Clinch, where visitors can explore masonry fortifications and interact with period reenactors who bring the 1860s to life. Beyond the fort, the beaches are renowned for finding fossilized shark teeth and seashells along the shoreline. The charming downtown of Fernandina Beach is just a short drive away, offering local boutiques and seafood dining. Visitors also enjoy the pier, which extends into the river for excellent angling opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer scenic, rustic environments over the high-density layout of modern RV resorts. It is perfect for history buffs and families who enjoy active outdoor pursuits like cycling and beachcombing. If you value natural privacy and direct access to Florida’s coastal history, this park is a premier destination. It is less suited for those requiring massive clubhouses, but perfect for those who want to wake up to the sound of the ocean.

My boyfriend and I loved exploring Fort Clinch! It was worth the $6 entry fee and $2.50 per person to enter the Fort. The beach at this state park is beautiful but lots of oysters (watch your step)

It holds the history of the island. For $6 entrance fees we were able to tour the park. The salt marsh is a great first stop. The light house can be seen from here. The history of the light house is on a plaque at this stop. Walking on dunes is prohibited. A paved road takes you through the park with pullouts along the way. The vegetation is thick on both sides of the road. A camp ground is available too for those interested in camping. The fort itself is something to see. Interesting that there was never an engagement there.

Beautiful fort, I’ve been coming here for years. Great scenery, right by the water. They have a gift shop and visitor’s center as well. It’s $6 per car to get in and an additional $2.50 per person to see the fort. Plenty of parking, but the road from the entry point to the actual parking lot is pretty far with a low speed limit. Overall, it’s worth visiting!

Very cool and unexpected find on Amelia Island during our vacation. The fort was built before the war of 1812 and most recently still under military control during WWII. It was near exploring all the nooks, kitchens and barracks and offices quarters. You can walk on top of the tour for a view of the river and see Georgia. There is a soldier dressed is union uniform that will answer any questions you have as well as a museum full of all the history. Only $2.50 pp.

Fun activities, lots of history, and very knowledgeable staff and reenactors. I had a blast visiting and cannot wait for my next visit. Very good views of the Fort from the beach, which is easily accessible. There are several enjoyable trails to hike, walk, and bike as well.
